Calgary probably should've traded Gaudreau after 2020-2021 if he wasn't willing to sign an extension.

Mother of god.

I forgot that accumulating assets and cap space is a weapon. What a fit he’d be for that team. I can’t even imagine what his RFA rights would cost. Short of their untouchables, everything should be on the table. Holtz, Nemec, picks. If they want to get it done, they have the stuff. Did you factor in Bratt’s contract? I group him with the untouchables.

Napkin math was Bratt + Tkachuk + Gaudreau takes roughly their cap space (27 MM). It would likely lose them 2 of their RFA Forwards (Zacha, Boqvist, Wood). That’s sure as hell not stopping me.

Dougie makes basically half of their entire D corps budget by himself. And most of the rest of it are 3 and 4 MM expirers in Severson and Graves. Obviously you’d want to keep Severson, but they have ways to get leaner wherever they prefer.

Yeah I could have sworn Carolina was offering a sign & trade with Hamilton for that 8th year. That was the way to get around it but obviously they don’t really happen in the NHL.
That wouldn’t be trading his rights though that would be trading him. Teams should try to do that more often though. NHL lagging behind.

I would like to hear if Treliving mentioned the eight years or was responding to someone asking about that or if it’s just added by Pierre.

Look at this UFA D crop this year. Risto would have cleaned up tomorrow. His mindset really is a perfect fit for this team.
Which his agent probably had already determined.

People get it wrong, Fletcher doesn't overpay, he just pays for the wrong players.

But look at Hextall, 6x$5M for Rakell at 29, after trading a 2nd, Simon, Auston-Reese at the TDL, 6x$6.1M for Letang at 35, doesn't QO Heinen (who I'd target at the right price) and is going to let Malkin walk.

GMs make the worst decisions when they're trying to open windows or keep them from closing.

I don't really understand the complaining about Pittsburgh's contracts. They won their 3 Cups with this crew; they're still good enough to win a round or two, unlike Chicago's old core in recent years. Unless you go full tear down (which they won't with Crosby signed for 3 years), ride off into the sunset with still decent hockey. The Penguins on the 16th hole of their current era are still better than anything the Flyers have done since 2010. It's just legacy building at this point, so it's okay to approach it with that perspective -- the 35+ stuff just seems manageable at worst.

Not to mention Malkin 36-38 will be far better than Hayes at 30 and for $1 million less lol

Yeah, we're not dealing with low-tier former stars. Malkin is one of the best few players of his generation, and he has aged as such. He's not in free fall, despite injuries. He can still over-perform much of that contract, and no one can say with a straight face Pittsburgh should've done anything but re-sign him.

It’s just not even close how much better of a GM Hextall is than Fletcher.

My God. He got Letang and Malkin for 12.2 AAV

That’s nuts, even if they’re old. This is their last shot at a Cup and they know it. They’re going for it.

Just be ready for Hextall to add Lindblom tomorrow.
