Also, Lambos was a 1st rounder. That pick looks more and more like a miss.
Yeah but so far I dont see a ton of talent picked behind lambo that they missed out on.

matt knies is the first name to pop out but so far hasnt really broken out at the nhl level

olen zellweger and logan stankoven could definitely be players but they are like extreme edge-case small. like jared spurgeon and mats zuccarello sized respectively. Personally, I cant really hold it against the Wild for not using one of their 1st round picks on either one of those guys.

Edit: how appropriate is it that the lambo pick was acquired in the zucker trade with addy? You can clearly see what Guerin was after. From addison, lambos, peart 2nd round pick and all the way thru to the fiala trade for faber he's been searching for super mobile defensemen.

This is such a reach. Likely has more to do with playing on a crappy team and injury recovery.
He was playing on a crappy team before and killing it. If the injury was an issue he wouldn’t have suited up for the big club. He got his confidence rattled hard for zero reason. It was dumb then and it’s even more indefensible in hindsight.

One of our few trade options is out

I look at this as a positive, mostly bc I'm the kind of guy that always looks at things that way.

Billy wouldnt rubberstamp a mid-season back surgery to Maroon unless he was pulling the plug on the season right? right?!

Anyway getting a 3rd back was the most that could be hoped for from Pat so not a huge opportunity lost, if its lost at all.

It's not worth arguing about becuase you'd never change your opinion. I'm just saying, I disagree.

And I accept that you disagree and you may indeed be right. I just felt this is where we’d end up as soon as they gave him that game and now here we are. Obviously all speculation.

I think GMBG has been pretty hands off in the drafting. Marat K and Rossi are not the type of players GMBG has gone after in FA/trades. Wallstedt (due to trading up) and Stramel picks are where I think is where he was really hands on.

IIRC Addison was PITs best prospect (AHL at least) at the time, and they had a pretty bare cupboard. So it might be lack of options more than anything else.

By his comments and actions he wants the bigger physical d-men, not small(er) skill d-men.

Who was the MVP of the first half? I only watched about 8 or so games - and many of the games I saw were horrendous - so I can't really say.

Ek?
Faber?
Gus?

I'd have to go with Faber TBH. Love Ek, but if they didn't have Faber, especially when both Brodin and Spurgeon were out, it would've been ugly.

There is usually at least one bonafide star taken in the 2nd. We’ve had a bunch of 2nd rounders. I think it’s reasonable to expect at least one to play a big role in the coming years. ‘14 was a below average 2nd round.

Also, Lambos was a 1st rounder. That pick looks more and more like a miss.

I do agree that we need to temper expectations, but the 2nd round is usually more fertile than the ‘14 class
Lambos is a late first rounder. Let's not pretend that is the same as a top 15, or top10 pick. JEE was a 20 oa…surely your ire satisfied with that, and how well Yurov is trending? The entire first round is littered with players who have underwhelmed such as Pulju, Turcotte, Kakko, nvm the late first round.
Maybe, in a draft, you get one star player in the 2nd. That’s a 1 in 32 chance. We already got our star in the 5 th round, defying all odds. Expecting another one in the 2nd ( well, we had the smarts to draft Faber)is unrealistic.

Mason Shaw has been getting his game legs back under him over the past couple of weeks. Any indications he'll get an NHL contract in the near future and be back with the big boys?

His speed/acceleration are a noticeable issue. If he does get a contract, I'd be shocked if he was back up with the big club.

I think it's wiser to let him play more minutes and see how the knee is down in the AHL for the rest of the year.

Aho, Carlo, Cernak, Greenway, Hintz, Sprong, R.Andersson, Dunn, Siegenthaler, DeBrincat, Girard, Hart, Lindgren, Hronek, Dube, Robertson, Samberg, Ferraro, Hague, Romanov, McLeod, Drury, Perunovich, Fehervary, Marchenko

That’s 2nd rounders taken over a 4 stretch from ‘15-‘18.

We have had 9 2nd round picks over the last 5 drafts. it’s too early to judge most these guys, but the early returns are not promising at all.

Kaprizov, Lambos, Yurov & JEE have nothing to do with this. They weren’t 2nd round picks

just noticed gabe perrault is doing fantastic i wonder is billy is kicking himself for the stramel pick yet?
I don’t think Guerin is the kicking himself type. Gotta love that he admitted they latched onto Stramel as their guy around the Holidays of his draft season.

He should be. It's not like Perrault is the only one after the Stramel pick playing well, but we've gone over this quite a few times. Until Stramel shows a pulse in college hockey, it will continue to be a festering sore, just like the Filip Johansson pick.

So 25 out of ~128 2nd round picks is a 19% hit rate. So we're basically hoping that 1.5 of our 9 2nd round picks over the last 5 years turn into something in between Robertson and Drury. Heidt and Khusnutdinov are probably the leaders in the clubhouse right now with O'Rourke not quite excelling in the AHL right now. Maybe Peart.

obviously wild scouting has NOT done a good job drafting D. lets hope that changes asap!
Which is hilarious because they used to be so good at drafting defenseman.

I think the development team, GM, coaches and everyone else that has to do with scouting and Iowa need to be fired

It’s brutal because Perrault fell right in our lap , was a consensus higher pick and obviously like massive flashing neon BPA sign. All he had to do was shift strategy a little bit. f*** there was still a chance Stramel would have been there mid 2nd round.

I must be the only one who didn't/doesn't consider Perreault a no-brainer pick. Not to say I like(d) the Stramel pick any better, but Perreault seems to be a lot of flash with a big question mark around whether the substance translates to the NHL level. I mean, he led the USNTDP in scoring over guys like Will Smith, Ryan Leonard and Oliver Moore, yet they were all taken before him, in Smith and Leonard's cases, WAY before him. Now he's playing with the same guys as well as Cutter Gauthier on a loaded BC team. Just think he may not be as automatic or fool proof as it seems reading through some of these threads (still not a fan of picking Stramel).
