He's always lacked strength, and maybe ideas, but I can see both improving with time, hard work, and experience. He certainly has the size, shot, and his skating is good enough. I have barely watched him this year, and have no idea if he has improved over last year. Some players simply top out, others slowly improve.

Beckman called up. Which could be his last shot with the Wild imo, but what do I know.

He's 22, on the last year of his ELC, and isn't arbitration eligible. They'll give him an $800k x 2, 2 way, $150k-$200k guaranteed this offseason.

He's not worth anything in trade (he'll be waiver fodder next year). He's had a meh AHL career so far, and done nothing of note in the times he was called up to the NHL.

I will be surprised if he is at training camp next year unless he shows something with the big club. I think he'd be flipped for another prospect of similar ilk - one of those one for ones where they are around same age...change of scenery type things.

He's pretty much the same as last year. Not much of a puck carrier (when he tries to do entries on PP, it usually doesn't go well), OKsh in cycles, turns puck over too much, but has a good shot. Has improved defensively when engaged, but he's not always engaged. I can't say I have watched every game to say has hasn't improved slowly...but if it has been, its been verrrrry slowly.

If he gets a few games and more than 6 minutes with the big club, I guess we will see.

Why flip him, and who wants him? He's a dime a dozen prospect, not a 1st rounder that has failed (Phillips). He could be used as a throw in for a trade if MN was buyers, but it doesn't look liek they are going to be buyers. They'll also need to fill out the roster if they do end up selling the Maroon, Duhaime, and/or Dewar for whatever at the TDL.

There isn't any reason not to re-sign him. It's not like Iowa is stacked at the FWD position or has a bunch of new players coming in to push him out of the lineup. He's not close to the 260 game mark, where it would turn him into a vet player (you can only dress 6 +1 exempt vet players).

To give him a chance elsewhere and another prospect a chance here? His progress has pretty much stalled here, so if he doesn't show anything, I don't see why you wouldn't call another GM to see if anyone wants to try a 1 for 1 for change of scenery.

On the other hand, one thing that may be likely that I forgot that would support your perspective is they did give him an A, so perhaps they do see him as someone who can provide some leadership to the young guys coming in...help them learn the process, etc.

I'm just looking at what MN needs for prospects, and all that really comes to mind is center. They need no more d-men, and goalies can be gotten off a street corner. They need scoring FWDs, and that's what Beckman is for Iowa. He led the team last year in nonPP goals (20) and is leading the team (8) this year too. He should pass though waivers easily based on his play up to this point, so the fear of losing him for nothing shouldn't be a factor.

I could see trading a LD in prospect in a swap of some sort, but a scoring FWD doesn't make sense to me.

You make a fair point. Not that it matters that much but I thought he was 23 turning 24 this year, which is clearly incorrect.

Adam Beckman meet Alexander Khovanov, Sam Hentges, Adam Gilmour, Dimitri Sokolov, Damian Giroux, Shawn Boudrias, Pavel Jenys...guys that had some level of hype and fell completely flat on their face.

Bankier, Novak, you guys are next!

That is the life of a mid to late round prospect. For every Kaprizov, Haula, Kuemper, or Soucy, 3 or 4 will miss. Most miss, and most fans don't even know their names. We do, but that's because we're on a board that is all about hype for prospects. Most people don't care this much about it.

Only one of those guys ever scored 24 goals in a season in the AHL (or to my recollection even came close). Maybe Beckman amounts to nothing but scoring goals will always have value.

Hentges suffered an injury that he could never recover from that ended his pro career. I wouldn't call that "falling on his face". I'd call it "tough luck".

Just saying maybe we shouldn't think these guys will be much of anything even if they tear up their respective league.

You mean not immediately penciling them into the NHL lineup due to a good year in a lesser league?

:sarcasm:

I don't see anything wrong with cautious optimism.
I agree, and I think the key word there is "cautious". Pencil may not be pen, but I've seen people put multiple of these guys into a projected NHL lineup, even into the top-6. That's not exactly cautious.

For the record, though, it doesn't bug me. I know people are just fantasizing, and that's fine to do. I'm not here to ruin anyone's fun.

I guess I don't remember seeing that being done with those names.

I have Yurov penciled in, but it's hard not to at the moment. That's it.

Khovanov was many times. Marat K (not on that list) was last year. Rossi was when he was drafted. Lambos was penciled in to make the opening night roster this year. It's very common on the boards to have prospects (CHL mainly) making the team right out of that league.

Agree with the first three(Sokolov, too), but I didn't see Lambos getting penciled into the starting lineup in this year's camp by a majority of posters. Rossi wass hard to figure because of his Covid situation, which, in retrospect, really messed with his development.

Wallstedt is the guy that just about everyone is penciling into the NHL. Don't look now, but he isn't in the top 20 AHL goalies in GAA or Save %.
