The biggest issue is that Lambos, O'Rourke, Hunt...and whoever else we drafted haven't exactly lit the AHL on fire.

Brodin - Faber
Lambos - Spurgeon
Middleton - O'Rourke/Hunt

Would have been a great top 6 if Lambos had put together his game and O'Rourke and Hunt developed a bit more, but progression isn't linear and prospects bust more often than not.
There is still plenty of time for these guys, even as mid to late season call ups if they progress. I personally didn’t have Lambos close to ready for this season last year, but he has progressed quite nicely to potentially be an option later this season in my eyes.

Faber on the top pair is likely something that not many here were expecting. I think Spurgeon is capable of holding down a middle pair on his own, so if you did want to break someone like Lambos in, he could be a great match. Otherwise, Middleton is not ideal but he does work with Spurgeon and is generally fine when he’s not asked to carry his own pairing against premier matchups.

The core players look great to me (well if Kaps skating comes back at least), some of the periphery guys have a had an outsized influence on the team performance so far, I think we see this team have some pretty strong stretches this season if they can avoid the injury bug.

Lambos, or anyone of those guys for that matter, highlight of their game isn't point production. It's more their reliability and skating. Which is why I've been an advocate of using a 1st round pick on an offensive leaning defenseman in the last 2 drafts. The 2024 might have some good options and we really need to develop an eventual PP QB.

I see Lambos as a #3-5 guy, could probably develop into a nice compliment to Spurgeon. Hunt and O'Rourke I see as just #5-6 depth guys but its not bad to develop those guys as well on cheap contracts like Dewar, Duhaime etc.

Lambos has played what, like 10 games in the AHL?

O’Rourke has half the amount of points he had all of last year in just 10 games played.

Iowa’s forwards suck. It’s hard to get points as a result.

Not everything is points; O'Rourke and Hunt are taking their time developing (though Hunt has had some injuries to contend with).

If you look at Lambos and his scouting report, he has fallen pretty hard. He was seen as a top 5-10 pick in 2020 and starting in 2021, the pandemic happened, he didn't adjust well in Finland, didn't look good for Canada WJC (and couldn't even get on the ice) in 21-22, couldn't even crack the team in 22-23...He did wear the C and did have a decent season last year, but he went from a top pairing guy to hopefully a middle 4 pairing guy.

What exactly do you mean by light the AHL on fire then? I don’t recall that phrase ever being used for a guy who has superb defensive skills.

Curiosity is getting the better of me, how often do you watch Lambos? Cause you were already caught commenting on Stramel as a bust without having watched him play this year. The points you are making strike me as “haven’t watched.” It’s just hard to validate opinions when I’m fairly certain there has been minimal actual watch time, ya know?

Every time I watch Lambos I think he has done fairly well. It’s only been a few games here or there. I don’t think he was ever regarded as a future top pairing guy. Top 4 with an outside chance* of being a top pair player.

O'Rourke and Hunt had struggles adjusting to the AHL, but Hunt is more due to injuries than anything, so that can account for that. O'Rourke, I thought, would have had an easier time adapting to the AHL last year as he had a pretty good spell but watching him, I was kind of meh on him. For me, both O'Rourke and Hunt weren't really discussed much other than O'Rourke had a pretty mediocre year and Hunt had injury problems that made it hard to gauge how good he was.

I've caught more of Lambos than I have of Stramel and Stramel only because he played 5 freaking games and last year was...meh. Lambos can skate, but he's in the mold of all the other Minnesota prospects. Meh offensively, good defensively and a good middle 4 guy.

If you look at the scouting reports for Lambos during his draft year:

NHL Projection

Top-pairing, minute-eating No. 1 defenseman for all situations.

To think that Lambos will end up as anything but a top-four defenceman in the near future would be a mistake. He has top-pairing potential and developed the right way, by the right organization, Lambos could be a stud defenceman at the NHL level contributing at both ends of the ice at some point in the next few years.

Lambos has the potential to be a top-pairing defender in the NHL. He is very strong defensively for his age and if this development continues he could play against top lines at the next level. With the limited games he played due to the pandemic and injuries he will need more time in junior and is likely to be in the WHL for the next two seasons. If he can improve his offensive game and become a true power-play quarterback, he could be a franchise defenceman. As it stands though, he is more likely to become a team’s second or third best defender. Lambos game is reminiscent of Alex Pietrangelo (H/T to Gabriel Foley), but this is a stylistic comparison only and not one based on skill or potential.

One analyst had him to project better than Luke Hughes.

If Lambos turns out to be a bigger version of Spurgeon - wonderful, and I think he'll get there eventually, but the Wild need defensive help now. Spurgeon is declining, they just sent Addison packing, Bogosian, Goligoski, Merrill and Mermis are all stop gaps at the very best. They have Brodin and Faber. If there is ever a time for a defenseman to step up, it's right now and I had hoped that Lambos would be in the mix to do that given his resume. I wouldn't be surprised if Lambos tops out as a Scandella/Soucy type of guy.

Finally, remember Lambos was 20 for almost half the season last year, had spent almost 4 years in the WHL (if it wasn't for the pandemic) . He was also the 2nd overall pick in his draft year, so he had some serious potential or at least that's what they saw.

You should be focusing on where these guys are in the spring, we don’t really need any of them up until we want to start pushing for the playoffs. This team is very likely a playoff roster as constructed, no point in fiddling around when you don’t need to and have limited cap space to work with. We weren’t even able to play Lambos due to cap for most of this season anyway. Let him develop more, our development team seems to be doing a pretty bang up job lately if Rossi is an indicator. He’s there later on, but there is no rush.

We should be looking for a replacement for Goligoski and Merrill now. Get them time to learn the ropes of the NHL.

You point to Rossi, what about Addison? Beckman? Walker?

We have them or they will be available by trade later in the season when we have cap. Just like last year this is the survival part where we accrue space and stay afloat.

I’ve never been high on Beckman so can’t say much either way but he is at least playable but not better than our already great forward lines.

Walker has been in the system for a year, and made good progress, but he has improvement in coverage needed too before he is ready, maybe he would be playable if our D was ready, but at the moment it’s not.

We are already breaking in rookies left and right, staggering and balancing development is good for roster stability. We don’t need to be our best team right now, we just need the core pieces in place to get there by season end.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with the team developing a player, and a player just not being capable.

Last year, you were using Rossi as an example of poor development yourself. Did the team suddenly change how they were developing him, or did he realize what he needed to do this offseason to deal with the strength of NHL players?

Beckman is a toothpick still himself, and Walker is found money for whatever he becomes since he was a UDFA signing.

How about Boldy? Faber? You going to credit the Wild for them or will you just ignore them?

Personally I think the player development side is a bit more on the players themselves than you want to give credit for. Poor drafting would be more of an issue than poor player development.

I would say most of the times it's far more on the player than the team. Very few guys are naturally skilled enough to succeed in the NHL without putting the work in, and the teams can't put the work in for the player, they can only help direct the player towards what to work on and how to work on it.

That is why I sometimes like looking at a team's ability to develop solid NHL players from players with alot less skill than 1st round picks, so guys like Soucy and Dewar at interesting case studies. Now those are successes and easy to point out, the harder ones to identify are the failures - because they are starting from an assumption that they don't have alot (or enough) skill. So do you blame player development or just ... part of the business, not everyone makes it?

I'm sure if you spent time graphing all this out and categorizing players, you could. But honestly who has the time...

I think Rossi was dealing with health issues. Then they say 15ibs muscle? For small fast guys that’s a lot work. Sure seems to have helped. Have Beckman and Walker put on weight?. They looked fast but you need to be able to take the grind.

Peart, ROR, Hunt, Lambos and company have got to like their chances to claim an NHL spot sooner than expected if they can perform. I like Peart & Lambos to separate themselves from the pack and show they are bonafide NHLers. But that’s probably next fall

I’ve pretty much written off ROR, kinda for a while now
Well, he's pretty much the best Dman down in Iowa this year. I'm hoping that he is somewhat late maturing physically - if he can pack on some pounds/strength then I think he'll be a NHL'er.
