Maybe, but would that be worth not having him next year for a little over $4M? I'd probably rather keep him

A 1st and a prospect would 110% be worth not having him next season. That's two pieces that could be a part of this core when the team is actually ready to contend. Plus, without a contract extension, he's still free to sign here in the summer if he loves it here that much.

Dewar is a very solid grinder. I think whoever gets him will end up very happy. Fast, tough and has zero ego

Oh shit we're doing the draft lottery now?

EDIT: Is this a mock lottery?
EDITx2: WTF would they do that on TSN? I just woke up and see a lottery going and there's no "MOCK" on the screen, what else would I think?

Honestly, I think there's at least some logic behind the 2026 picks. Obviously prices could be different in 2 years, but looking at what certain guys are going for, and the 2025-26 season is the first one of no big buyout penalties, if they aren't able to shoot their wad during the summer of 2025, we could have quite a bit of cap space that season (pending internal extensions). Having 2 3rds, 2 5ths and 2 6ths (so far) in the 2026 draft gives them some decent extra ammo to use at the 2025-26 trade deadline.

Something something dumb luck something something.

But I agree with you. Was reading that this has been a buyer's market and very much so.

How would they do a real lottery when there's still 25% of the season to be played and we don't know how the standings will look at the end?

With the low prices this year, would rather keep Dewar than lose him for a 2027 3rd. Merrill, OTOH... a 2037 pick would be fine.

Is there a rule about how far in the future a pick can be?

I thought it was like 5 years or so

They're looking to contend now, and can be buyers at the TDL next season. A late 1st this year isn't likely to be on the team for 4 years. Rossi and Nutty just got on the squad this year. And that's assuming it would be a first in this year's draft. The only winger that returned a 1st this year was Guentzel, it was conditional, and he's a goal scorer.

But lets assume Zucc returned a late 1st. Yeah, he could sign here in the off-season, but that almost never happens. Whatever team acquired him would probably want an extension and he might too, rather than risk getting injured so he can test free agency at his advanced age.

I guess it depends on when you think they're ready to contend but in either case I don't think you get a 1st for Zucc and also get him back next year.

Your question was whether a 1st and a prospect was worth not having Zuccarello, not whether Zuccarello can return a 1st and a prospect.

They better not sign him.

I actually think they should sign Stramel to an ELC immediately after the NCAA season ends. Get him down to Iowa so the Wild's development team can see what can be done. Maybe nothing can be done, but we know he's not showing any progress at Wisconsin.

Add a 4th rounder to the mix. Don't think it's a coincidence.

Realistically that could indicate a couple things

1) Guerin goes heavy this summer or next on trading prospects for established NHL roster players, guys like Rossi, Heidt, etc could be moved

2) Prospects could make the jump sooner than we expected

3) Guerin has no clue what he's doing

I think he's just stocking ammo for a time where we may have quite a bit of cap space and the want/need to make a TDL push.
