Martin Brodeur: Old school goaltending

Ovechkin+Bure=Goals, I hear what you're saying and I agree with you...when Brodeur lets in a weak goal. I'm a goalie too (play the butterfly like 99.9% of the goalies out there) and I cringe at some of the goals Marty lets in, BUT there are some things you have to understand. Every single goalie who has ever played the game has been scored on five hole, and scored on five hole more times than they'd like to remember (if you're a goalie, I'm sure you'll agree that nothing pisses you off more than a five hole goal because it went through you, so there's no excuse for letting it in). When most goalies let in a five hole goal, though, you say "weak goal; he should have had it," but when Brodeur lets in a five hole goal (or other goal that sneaks through him), instead of just saying "bad goal," you question his whole style. The thing is, I don't think Brodeur necessarily lets in more five hole or underarm goals than other elite goalies (I don't think anyone keeps the statistics to check); it's just that it's more noticeable when Marty lets in those goals because of his style, so then you blame the style instead of just saying it's a weak goal like you would say for a fundamental butterfly goalie.

Also, just looking at the bad, you don't see the good. As mentioned, Brodeur's style allows him to have better rebound control and gives him a better chance of stopping the high shots (and I'm sure there are many more ways in which Brodeur's style is superior to the basic butterfly, at least to Brodeur), but you can't definitively say what saves Brodeur and his style makes that might or would have been goals had he played the butterfly. If he makes an easy save, high off his shoulder, you wouldn't think anything of it, but that same shot might have been a goal if played the butterfly. His saves that would have gone in on a pure butterfly goalie aren't as glaring as the few goals he lets in that a butterfly goalie would have (unless the butterfly goalie lets in a bad goal), and that's ignoring that Marty will let in bad goals too that you can't blame on his style (they're just bad goals).

1. Ranford...2. Richter...... :handclap: .Oh well you know hockey .....at least you think you know it

Right. Those two were the 90's style "half butterfly" goalies along with Brodeur and Barasso who have won cups. As he said only 1 of your "superior new style goalies" has won a cup (Khabibulin).

And also, I am still waiting on you to touch on some of the other points that others have mentioned...

Honestly I don't see much about Richter's play that was butterfly when he won that cup. If it was, then it was the least butterfly of all butterfly styles. :dunno:

I specifically mentioned the new era goalies that you listed. Learn how to read. :biglaugh:

WOW !!!!!!!!!! BRODEUR was so square on SWISS FIRST GOAL.....   What a goalie.... He has won 3 stanley cups....so no goalie on earth would have stop this shot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so you're 21 but you act 12 year old trying to make a case where no one can see your reasoning. Ghenghis Keon had a perfect explaination about this. Why do you insist on trying to make your ridiculous comments and saying how this style is fading away and is old? and to even think that brodeur is always guessing on the shots is real genius. And to think that brodeur doesn't deserve a SC because he hasn't won a Conn Smyth? please. Isn't it so hard to change a child's mind when they want something so bad.i think this whole thread is "Pucking Buulsshit !" and is quite funny to read. ALL HAIL BUTTERFLY GOALTENDING!!! There is no other way to SUCESS!!!!

YEAH CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME THAT GERBER'S BUTTERFLY HASN'T OVERPLAYED BRODEUR'S HALF BUTTERFLY/HALF STAND-UP THING ?????

I hope the coaching staff of team Canada listens to you. The US might have an outside chance at a medal if Canada has someone other than Brodeur in net.

DID anybody ever saw luongo play on this pucking board ?????? he is the best goalie in the world right now !

P.S: It's not the goalie's pedigree that is going to make the save !!!!!!!!!

David Aebisher outplayed Thomas Vokoun. Seems Vokoun was a product of Nashvilles system after all.

This whole thread is a joke. You act like a child and think like one. You havent even responded to anyone that has actually challenged you.

Gerber's style is infaillible, just look his first game against Finland! :teach:

After wathcing today's game...Quinn has to play Luongo. Yea ok, the first goal..Dipetro was alone but the way Brodeur tried to stop the puck, it was horrible, instead g going into a b-fly, he goes into some akward position and the pucks goes off his blocker and in. Luongo is big, and makes saves easy.

Brodeur is also big and makes saves easy, what the hell is that argument?

NO he doesn't. Broduer dives around everywhere swatting at the puck, he doesn't make things easy....Luongo has better angles, skates better, and has excellent b-fly position. Seeing Brodeur doing crossovers in his crease makes me laugh.

I guess you're not a big Hasek fan nor a Roy fan for that matter. If Brodeur didnt make things look this easy, you wouldnt see so many threads with children arguing about nothing even though he's won pretty much everything in his career.

Roy? He reminds me of Luongo.

Yea he's won pretty much everything, with Stevens and Nieds helping, and facing 20 shots a game helps too. I like Marty, but I think its time for Canada to move on.

Yeah, why go to the guy that gave them a medal in the 2002 olympics, a medal in the 2004 world cup. And forget the fact that after having trouble, he basically carried the Devils back in the playoffs. Oh wait, thats true, that was Elias getting those 4 shutouts in what? 15 games? something along those lines.

Just a thought for you though, with Patrick Roy in net, Canada didnt even get a medal. Not even a freaking Bronze. With Wayne Gretzky and a good Lindros. How's that for pathetic?

But Luongo is like Roy, only without either the hardware or any type of success.

In Nagano, Canada sucked balls big time...Roy had no help, and Crawford couldn't coach.

Salt Lake City, Canada was actually playing like a friggin team, and helping out Brodeur.

Brodeur has been severly overrated, I don't care what anyone says, and I don't care how much "hardware" he has Brodeur was always playing behind the best defensive core in the league, yea sure had the 4 SO in 15 games, but what happened earlier into the season?

Hasek outdueled Roy in nagano, plain and simple.

Now there's a guy who is capable of listening to a game, and analyse the REAL FACTS.....Brodeur plays a complicated style end he often ends up in a bad position were he needs to dive to make the save !!!!!!!!!!!

If by blocker you meant post you're right. If he went butterfly he still would have left the top corner open which DiPietro hit so I don't really see your point. Oh and Canada didn't win in 98 because Crawford can't coach...have you seen Pat Quinn coach?

Why are you blaming Brodeur for anything anyway? Canada got shut out, you don't win too many games scoring a total of zero goals, I don't care if Luongo was 6'x4' and 700 pounds, Canada still wouldn't have won.
