Yup... its the reaction. If not for the reaction, people would just ignore his stats. Note this was posted before the Bruins 2024 series. So it only got worse:

View attachment 924989
in 21-22 he scored 2 goals and 6 assists in 7 games
in 22-23 he scored 3 goals and had 11 assists in 11 games . those numbers you posted make no sense
As far as shots close to the net you would have to watch the games and see if he is not being passed the puck or if there are other reasons

The real question is why on earth the Leafs cant win one game without Marner doing it for them. expecting 2 or 3 points per game every game is not rational or possible

Unsurprisingly, hate-based media tends not to be as effective when the team is winning multiple cups.

You did it Dekes! You jumped the shark haha.

When you have no way to argue the key points and facts Marners detractors bring to the table.

Rely on good old hate. It doesn't matter if it's not true, or if it's the result of skewed vision, it's gotta be 100% pure hate. We got so much hate here, cripes we have a hate machine bottling Marner hate for all Leafs nation. Did you have your bottle of hate today? I only ask because there are surely more Marner hate facts coming to this thread today.

This message has been brought to you by the coalition of lizard people and the flat earth society. All hail Tartaria.

Oh, he's already had the average shot distance stuff explained to him. Multiple times. He just ignores it and continues reposting it with statements he knows are wrong.
Because it's not about being correct. It's about finding anything to blast Marner.

There are a couple causes. For one, over the past two years in the regular season, 0.28% of Marner's shots have been a result of dump-ins from center ice. Over the past two years in the playoffs, dump-ins hitting the net represent 4.44% of Marner's shots. This skews the average, but really has nothing to do with his in-zone play.

Beyond that, blueline shots represent 20% of Marner's shots in the playoffs, and 16.4% of his shots in the regular season. This represents a difference of Marner taking an extra 1.6 point shots in the playoffs over the past 2 years, which is not only insignificant, but easily explainable. Why would Marner take slightly more blueline shots in the playoffs over the past 2 years?

1. The team averages 61% more time with the goalie pulled in the playoffs, where Marner generally replaces the defender.

2. We purposefully shot more from the point as a strategy to exploit Vasilevsky's weakness:
"Rob Gherson posted a fantastic thread on Twitter Tuesday evening breaking down some fundamentals as to why Vasilevskiy has struggled on these point shots."
"the main point he makes is how upright Vasilevskiy is in his stance when pucks are being shot from a distance. Essentially, this means that he isn’t set at the time the shot is taken, and takes a split second longer to get his body into position."
"Gherson coined the term ‘panic flopping’, suggesting it also affects Vasilevskiy’s ability to track the puck with his arms due to how quickly he has to react. That also makes it tougher to react to deflections, an area he has again been beaten on plenty in this series."
""We did a study back in the day, he was one of the lower percentage goalies in finding pucks from the point,” Lalonde explained."

3. The pucks were going in. His shooting percentage from the blueline in the playoffs over the past 2 years is 33.3%.

Which means people are literally here complaining about Marner scoring goals in the playoffs. Really shows how silly the whole thing is.

What a bizarre thread this has become. It will be interesting to see if it continues after the Leafs resign Marner.

Of course it will continue, for some it’s a lifestyle choice.
Not sure I'd put it quite that way, weird choice of words. But yes, it seems like no matter how badly he chokes in the playoffs, the same people will start chirping early in the season about how super crazy elite this "engine of the team" is.:laugh:

I'm hoping Marner becomes a playoff beast next spring and everyone will be happy. I don't think the chances of this happening are very good, but I guess you never know.

Marner currently sits disappointingly tied for #271 among goal scorers after 9-12 games by teams. Another slow start for Marner and hopefully we will see him start contributing to potting some goals .

He wants more money than Nylander new deal, but Willy is off to a red hot start with 8 goals in 11 games tied for 6th overall in the league as he attempts to validate his new deal. Nylander his own teammate the best comparable for Marner to use as leverage to his next deal.

If they make the playoffs and he doesn’t man up this year and he’s re-signed he’ll hear it.

Tkachuk said that they ( many others as well) try to eliminate players from a series as it goes along, and that appears to be what happens to Marner and Matthews.

I thought last year was his last chance, but it wasn’t, so the best case scenario is for those two to bow up, take no BS and fight back. If they do that they’ll be loved whether they win or lose.

They have the same number of points. I knew he was playing well but I didn’t realize he was that effective. It helps that Knies is banging in rebounds

How many of those points did he get earlier in the series? How many later in the series?

Looking at points to show he played well in the playoffs is flawed.

Looking at just points in the playoffs to show how somebody played is indeed flawed, but not as flawed as looking at just points in certain arbitrary games in the playoffs to show how somebody played.

Marner back to Auston and I talk. Weird response to a reporter asking him about Knies hot start.

Reporter:
How impressed with how
Matthews Knies has devloped, sometimes we forget how young he is in this league"

Marner:
"it's great, he's a big horse out there, a big fella, and he gets up and down the ice very quickly. I think I said this earlier: it's not always the easiest to play with Auston and I. Just sometimes the sporadicness, and sometimes we go into weird spots. I think we know where each other are, but some guys can't really figure it out, and Knies has done an unbelievable job of that this year. He really started getting along with it last year as well, so it's been great to see him come into his own. You know, he's a big body, wins a lot of battles, gets the puck back for us, and takes a lot of abuse in front of the net and gets results for it."

The Marner (and Rielly) stuff is silly to me because other factors have been so much more of an issue in the playoffs.

I've posted this before but it's just so telling.
Rielly, Marner and Matthews 5v5 over the last 3 playoffs:

Rielly 5v5:
Goals for/60: 3.07
Goals against/60: 1.55

Marner 5v5:
Goals for/60: 3.08
Goals against/60: 1.72

Matthews 5v5:
Goals for/60: 2.81
Goals against/60: 2.06

The entire rest of the team without them:
Goals for/60: 1.57
Goals against/60: 3.14

With so many series lost so tightly, having the worst performing bottom 6 in the league and running Campbell/Samsonov vs. Vasy/Bob/Swayman have been the primary factors. The PP has also been an issue too of course but if the rest of the team were as dominant 5v5 as guys like Marner and Rielly have been, this team would be going to the finals every year even with the same PP.

Going way too hard after either Marner (who leads the team in points the last 3 years and has been one of the best defensive wingers in the league) or Rielly (who has the best Relative goal differential of ANY player in he playoffs over that stretch) comes across like an old man yelling at cloud. It's reached new levels of unhinged status.

I mean, it was nice seeing actual playoff goaltending for the first time in forever with Woll in net right? (he's now 3-0 in the playoffs). The old management never got the team a playoff goalie and made stupid decisions with it's support cast. Thats like 20 million + cap a year on moronic choices..... that should be something we all agree on but instead I see quibbles about 1-2 million in salary for players that actually produced. Have back at it. Maybe some around here will get their wish and we'll all love Marner winning a couple cups for someone else. At least the media hasnt starting talking about phantom hot dog carts with him yet (How that writer still has a job is insane other than the fact he still has support and even gets reposted by some around here).

Woll lost the deciding game vs. FLA (game 5) and I'm pretty sure he took the loss in his relief appearance for the Samsonov injury.

Yea, yer right, how could I forget that holding the stick goal lol.

Woll has still looked like the only playoff goalie we've had since Belfour though.

Leafs top points over the last 3 playoffs:

1. Marner: 25 (PPG)
2. Matthews: 24
3. Rielly: 21

...and, yes, if every player on the Leafs had Marners 5v5 goal differential, the Leafs would probably have a cup lol.

He did very well against Tampa in the 2 series they played against them but what the f*** honestly possesses you to believe that Marner embodies anything you've credited him for against Boston last year?

Our 69 goal scorer has been MIA as well in series clinching games:

2024 against Boston:

Game 4 - 0G, 0A
Game 7 - 0G, 1A

2023 against Florida:
Game 4 - 0G, 0A
Game 5 - 0G, 0A

2023 against Tampa:
Game 5 - 1G, 0A
Game 6 - 1G, 0A

2022 against Tampa
Game 5 - 1G, 0A
Game 6 - 1G, 0A
Game 7 - 0G, 1A

So over the last 3 years in series deciding games Matthews has 4 goals, 2assists, 6 points, in 9 games. He’s making 13 million. You want to take about why we are struggling? If our top goal scorer cannot replicate his goal scoring pace from regular season to playoffs we are finished. Mitch isn’t absolved either. But this notion that it’s Mitch’s fault it dumb as shit. The stats speak for themselves. Outside of Nylander no one else is clutch. To me objectively, Matthews and Marner equally share a ton of responsibility for our struggles.

Is this last 3 years? Honestly I’m pretty surprised Nylander and Matthews only have 4 more goals than Marner. Thought it was way more tbh. Especially Nylander.

What’s wrong with this quote? Nothing. again, you continually search for the dumbest things to try and shit on Marner for. It’s absurd.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

He's still not doing the things that win hockey games.

He just wants to be an east/west perimeter orientated passer. Hasn't driven to the net all year, doesn't shoot enough, doesn't shoot on wide open nets. He overcomplicates everything on the ice.

He looks to have lost some speed as well over the years.

Its blatantly obvious he needs to go, especially with this new coach, its getting comical at this point.
Playoff games. But yes, I do agree with you.
