Let me elaborate it a bit.

The more one player dominates at a level that is pretty far from the top level (Junior level is always a lot different thing than NHL level), the more comfortable they become. The environment isn't really challenging and it doesn't force you to do everything in order to be better, more advanced. That's especially the case if the player isn't exactly the most hard working type of guy (on or off the ice). In addition to that, being in the junior level, when it isn't really challenging enough, can imprint some patterns that are typical in junior level but not desirable at all at the pro level.

That's the most important reason why the Sabres have been so hesitant to but Grigorenko back to the juniors. Grigorenko may not have been able to play in a role that is most suitable for him, but his eyes has been totally opened to the fact that the level of effort he has had, is not enough at all. That fact is a lot more important for his developement than putting up big numbers in junior level.

Would be more important if you hadn't noticed all of his coaches this year are saying he is working on his game. Mantha himself is more committed to certain aspects and has said as much. Sure this can be a concern for some people, but this doesn't really paint the picture of what is happening with Mantha. Yes he is dominating, but he is working on areas that he needs to work on in the process. Sutter referenced one of the things he really liked about Mantha was his willingness to be taught.

It might be that what is happening with Grigorenko smooths out and works out for the better after a bumpy beginning. However, that isn't the plan with Mantha.

Mantha was told from day 1 with the Wings organization what they want him to work on. With that they tell players they want them to be dominant players at whatever step of development they are on. He certainly deserves high marks for that, but his defense is better and his compete level is better. Are they all the way there, of course not, but he is going to log big minutes the rest of this season and likely next year in the AHL. He will be brought along to succeed and tweaked on rather than overwhelmed. Sure you can throw kids in the deep end of the pool, some are built for that, it just isn't the way the Wings approach development.

When they think a kid is ready for it they have typically allowed him playoff time in limited minutes or quick tastes of the NHL to gauge where they are and allowing them to see the NHL game and strengthen again in the AHL. It is a different system and quite frankly the luxury of doing it seems to be waning and we will see just how long they can keep doing this. Both Jurco and Ouellet were getting their taste of NHL life before 21 this year, so they seem to be heading towards bloodying these guys in the NHL a little earlier because the failure of vets in the organization. That is good news for Mantha, if he grabs his AHL opportunity by the throat, he has an excellent chance of making it to the NHL quicker than some of the past Wings depending on the off-season.

I still can't believe that there has only been 1 game this year that he didn't register a point in. He's currently on a pt streak dating back to Oct 17th. Also has 10 goals in his past 6 games.

Might have his second tonight. Cadorette not giving anything tonight. Val d'Or close to 40 shots after 2. Mantha and his linemates having a bunch of chances but nothing going in.

edit: indeed, 2nd pointless night of the season. Had a bunch of good chances but Cadorette brought his A game tonight. Close to 50 shots for Val d'Or tonight, only one goal to show for.

You owe the kid an apology.

I'm happy for Wings fans. I remember on draft night, my roommate is a Wings fan that doesn't follow the draft outside of the top 5. I told him to be pumped for the Mantha pick. Never going to be a Selke winner, but the guy is an offensive machine. Currently 14 points off his total from last year in half as many games. Impressive.

Ok, I get what your saying, but would you rather have the player that doesn't dominate juniors?

Grigorenko is a special case of being too good for juniors, and too young for the NHL. IMO, Buffalo should have looked for a SHL team, or FEL team to loan him too.

Also, IMO,( if not loaned) they should have had him up with the big team working against(some;)) NHL players in practice and hitting the weight room. Bring in a trainer for him.

Look at it this way though, Ryan Johansen struggled for about 3 years entering the NHL, now look at him.

Same with my family they watch every Wings game but no CHL games so the draft is just mehhh to them. When we traded our 18th pick to SJ I was praying no one grabbed Mantha and boom two picks later running around the house haha.

Mantha finishes with 1+4=5 (All 4 assists were primary). Not a bad night. Up to 40+44=84 in 38 games.

Everytime he was on the ice the Foreurs were in the Huskies zone. Everytime he touched the puck there was a scoring chance.

He could have finished the game with at leat 2 goals 1 assist more..

That snipe that hit the crossbar ma gawd. He was sure the puck was in.

Detroit got themselve a gem. :handclap::yo:

84 points in 38 games is just absurd. If he turns into a legit star for detroit the hockey world is going to **** their pants.

If he plays every remaining regular season game, how many games is that to get more than 50goals and more than 100pts?

Well hes over a goal per game through 38 games. On his current pace he should hit 100 in about 7 more games and 50 goals in maybe another 8 or 9?

Depends on if he has a couple 5 point bursts or goes pointless for a couple could change things but hes on pace for 100 points in about 45 games

41st of the season. Probably back in the goal scoring lead for good.

edit: or not, Duclair scores the empty netter and takes the lead with 42 goals

Given his point production combined with his size and attitude (seems humble and willing to work on his flaws), I'd be more surprised if he didn't become a star at this point.
