Counted it up myself, he has 44 hits this season in 40 games. Might be more physical than people think

I'll ask in this thread because he's Mantha's teammate, but this Gelinas guy (lead all CHL defenseman with a 12pts margin), what kind of player is he, he's got an insane amount of points for a Dman.. yeah yeah undersized, over-aged Dman from the Q, not drafted, highly unlikely he could play in the NHL, but what's the impression on him?

I'm not positive but I think the QMJHL website mislabeled him as a defenseman. Think Gelinas centers Val d'Or's top line. Can somebody who watches Q games verify this?

No he's a D. Either Marcotte, Henley or even Richard from time to time will center the top line.

Gélinas is an offensive minded D. Good shot from the point, sees the ice well but still too much of an adventure in his own end to have a great pro future ahead of him. He's not an Erik Karlsson type either who can carry the puck from end to end. That said, in the offensive zone he's been excellent all season long.

Ah ok thanks. It didn't seem to make sense when you look at Val d'Or's player stats. They have two wingers (Mantha and Marcotte) tearing it up but no center who's even remotely close to them in points. You would think whoever centered that line would also be tearing it up just by feeding off those two. But if they are rotating guys in and out of that spot then that makes sense.

He is also shooting over double his average shooting % so that will inflate numbers a little bit.

Compared to what? NHL players?

No, the other players that I typically consider in any way "physical" on either side, from my seats at the Metro Centre, or my couch if I'm watching away games on Eastlink. Mantha doesn't shy away from physicality, but he does very, very little to invite or initiate it, either. Not that he doesn't find enough room out there to score. More that it's obviously going to be one of the biggest parts ("question marks" has negative connotations) of his transition to the NHL.

So Mantha has 42 goals in 41 games....

Detroit's infamous patience with kids will be thrown out the window, starting September 2014 folks

Jee whiz man, I dunno. I kind of hope so though. We're not even sure if Jurco will be a fill time Red Wing next season, and he sure as hell deserves to be. Even without the dead weight(Samuelsson, Bertuzzi, Cleary), our offense is such a long jam. Granted, even if we don't bring Alfredsson back either, I'm not sure what to expect from the organization toward Mantha. Maybe with the performance of Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, and Jurco, the Detroit Braintrust has reevaluated their mentality toward younger guys? Most of us think he won't be with the team next year.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Alfredsson
Nyquist-Weiss-Franzen
Tatar-Helm-Sheahan
Abdelkader-Andersson-Eaves/Miller
ex: Ferraro, Callahan, Jurco
(Something to this effect next fall)

Its too bad that the wings have such a logjam at forward because hes the type of prospect that should at least get a long look at camp and maybe a few games to see if he should stay up.

With as many forwards as Detroit has though, hes likely starting in the AHL and being the first call up. Thats not terrible though, he could likely use sometime to refine his game a bit. Hopefully he adds some weight as well.

I just dont see Mantha being added to the wings full time when Jurco has to be still. Especially because Jurco is a big body with skill and is playing well this year

Mantha will need to become a faster more explosive skater to make an impact in the NHL. His skating looked average at the World Jrs. With the proper training he has great potential, but he has his work cut out for him.

Only fast players are successful? Mantha is plenty fast for his size.

It's funny you say that considering his skating is widely regarded as one of his greatest assets....

Lol is this a serious post? Mantha is a fantastic skater for his size

I think Mantha might be the first Wings prospect in decades that could win a job out of camp. Or at the very least play 9 games.

If he can't be Justin Abdelkader for a top 6 role, then no, he should go to the AHl.

At the Jr level his skating is very good but he is not an exceptional skater which is what you need to see at his age to predict NHL success. I'm not saying he's a long shot, I'm just saying he has some work to do. The minors are full of big kids who tore it up in the CHL.

Ok. I think the Wings feel he is a good skater too. Like all kids his age he should get stronger, naturally causing him to be faster and stronger on his skates.

How many kids in the minors scored 50 goals in their draft year?

Yeah knocking the skating seems realy odd. You could see him turn the jets on quite a few times in the subway series and world juniors which jives with all the scouting reports. Blowing out wide around dmen is a solid move in his repertoire. His skating isnt just really good for his size, its really good in general. Add the 6'5 size and speed is one of the last things I would knock on him.

I understand his D needs work and maybe compete level, hes not a perfect prospect but knocking his speed seems really odd

Mantha 1G, 1A tonight and officially passes last year's point total.

43+47 (90 pts) in 42 games

2 goals, a fight and an instigator for Mantha

I was at the game, Mantha completely destroyed Dauphin. The poor guy was begging the ref to stop it.

One of his goal was a beauty, on a breakaway , he undressed the goalie, got tripped but still scored while falling. I must say I've been to 2 games in the last month and he yaps a lot always trash talking to opposite players after the whistle. Although, , talentwise, he is a man among boys.
