Seems as though he was right to feel confident in Coyle. He’s proving a lot of people wrong right now.
I don't want to take this thread off topic, so I'll say this and stop ... I like Coyle, I like him best as a third line center. He has a decent shot and is very good at protecting the puck. He is not a creative playmaking center who creates offense on the give and go off the rush, especially against higher quality opponents/lines and first pairing defense.
If he stays on the second line, and this is just my opinion, they should use him as a front of the net / slot presence and let his wingers feed him the puck for shots (Esposito style). If he can't get the shot off hopefully he can protect it and get it back to an open winger or defenseman.
But my original comment in this thread was - I kinda wish they had gone with the two rookie goalies (to start the season). Which I don't see as a gamble any different than or riskier than 'center by committee.'
Calgary seems happy at the moment and I'm sure we would have been too. Plus, we could have used the dollar savings to help stabilize elsewhere... such as towards an established 2C or top 4 pairing left side D.
Who knows, hopefully Ullmark settles in and puts together a string of games where he is unbeatable and the team rides him. Yet, so far, he seems a little off - maybe trying to do too much or is still learning (as are many of the new-B's) the defensive system in front of him and where people will be. As a whole we have been spoiled for the past 10+ years with for the most part steady exceptional level goaltending.
