When's the last time Butch started the same goalie on back-to-back days?

He is probably tired of Ullmark sitting on his ass that much. I think the quality seal of the great goalies in this league nowadays is that they dont flop around to much and are technically sound. Ullmark unfortunately isnt.

Both the Reilly and Ullmark deals will be added to the Beleskey, Backes, Moore pile. DS can't make a signing over 3 million in the UFA market. Both were desperation. Still think we will have a good year but Ullmark isn't going to be the goalie here for 5 years and we aren't going to be able to unload a slightly above average goalie at the price he is being paid. Mike Reilly has always teetered on being a 6th D/healthy scratch, how he took DS for 3 mill a year is beyond me. Was there really another team willing to pay him more??? These deals will haunt us. DS should have called it a day after Forbort, Haula and Nosek.

Down Goes Brown: Elias Pettersson, Philipp Grubauer, and the rest of the NHL's first month all-disappointment team

Linus made the all disappointment team on The Athletic:

Linus Ullmark., Bruins — When Ullmark signed a surprising four-year, $20-million deal to become Boston’s new starter, he was positioned to be the long-term replacement for Tuukka Rask. A month in, he seems to have already lost the starting job to Jeremy Swayman, at least temporarily, and his numbers are barely so-so. Look, Rask never actually said that he wasn’t coming back for sure, right?

Not ready to give up on Ullmark after just 6 games. While he hasn't looked good the last 2 games (both losses), he's 3-3-0 and in the 3 losses he hasn't gotten much in goal support. In fact in the games he was given the loss, Boston averaged 2 goals a game. Those 3 teams were also FLA, TOR and EDM. FLA & EDM are currently 1st and 2nd in goals scored with Toronto being just outside the top 10 at #12. Basically Ullmark would have needed to hold these offenses to 1 goal in order for Boston to have a shot at winning.

He hasn't looked great to me so far but I don't know anything about goaltending so I'm not one to judge. Think I've been spoiled by watching Rask for so long lol. He's had the tougher opponents so far too, which probably isn't helping his perception amongst us fans either. I think he'll be alright as the season goes on.

Goalie expert Kevin Woodley on the 32 Thoughts podcast this week was very high on him (great listen btw, highly recommend), same for Raycroft on Morning Bru recently. Seems like he's a goalie's goalie. Hopefully he can find his rhythm and get those numbers up once they resume playing in 2025 or whenever it is with this terrible schedule.

Oddly enough the on thing that stands out to me from his numbers is his 5v5 HDSV% has been way down from previous years. The 3yrs before coming to Boston he had an .831 HDSV% which was good for 22nd among all goalies (min 50gp). So far this year in Boston (again small sample) he's at a .626 HDSV% which is the worst in the NHL among goalies with at least 5 games (3rd worst including all goalies). Now that's not 100% on Ullmark, but if the defense can tighten up a bit and he limits those "soft" goals, then I expect he'll be fine.

Like I said that night of the Edmonton game, his numbers weren’t all that different from Rasks last 5 years here. The defense proceeded to hang him out to dry with multiple mite-level turnovers out in front and all of a sudden he’s “all disappointment team” material

I can't get past the salary difference between he and Vladar!!!! I can't believe how we gave him away????

Ummm, there's a world of difference between .917/2.22 and .903/3.01

and last time I checked, Tuukka played behind an equally bad defense those 5 years.

It's a great point, and I think I've read that 5v5 HDSV% has been shown to be one of the few goalie stats that's fairly repeatable year over year (maybe someone can correct me if I got that wrong). Certainly reasonable to expect that to come up over time considering how out of line it is with his career to date.

reading comprehension not a strong suit, eh? What was his sv% the night of the Edmonton game before being hung out to dry?

And I’d argue this is the worst D-group in years

This is pretty awful take by The Athletic. Here is a list of Goaltenders who make at least 5 mill a year and have been worse than Ullmark:
Marc-Andre Fleury
Matt Murray
Thatcher Demko
Semyon Varlamov
Philipp Grubauer

"He's not bad! Look at these other goaltenders who have played bad as well!"

He's in the running with all of these guys. I'm not saying he won't turn it around, but let's call a spade a spade here.

Well considering the title of the article is the all disappointment team the fact that there are 5 goaltenders than him right now and somehow makes it on the list is a complete joke. Also not once did I say He's not bad.

By the time Ullmark’s deal is coming off the books, you’re hopefully looking to extend Swayman. Ullmark is a good goalie. I think down the road, if need be, you could find a team desperate for a goalie to give him a look via trade. It wouldn’t be the first time a young rookie beats out a veteran and results in a trade. Swayman isn’t there yet. This is a good situation.

Agree on Reilly. I am just not impressed. An easy “why this guy” contract.

Ullmark was “benched” as was Reilly according to the Athletic

Linus will get the message I’m sure

The message is do better.
I’m sure He will try.
Problem is, what if he can’t do better? What if he is who he has been?

way too early for that, but it’s not inconceivable that he doesn’t reach the effectiveness that they hoped for.
