Tavares needs to replace Simmonds on that first PP. Don't care if he scores tonight. That is the wrong decision. Simmonds should not be getting more PP time than John.
I'm with you but at least Nylander being on the 1st unit is a start.

Power Play

8.25 expected goals for per 60 (#1)
9.80 goals for per 60 (#3)

Penalty Kill

5.47 expected goals against per 60 (#5)
.820 save percentage (#30)
8.22 goals against per 60 (#21)

with Campbell:

2.41 goals against per 60 (#1)
.941 save percentage (#1)

with Hutchinson:

7.26 goals against per 60 (#16)
.857 save percentage (#17)

with Andersen:

9.80 goals against per 60 (#29)
.786 save percentage (#31)
Holy crap and people are still arguing that goaltending hasn't been the primary factor in the majority of our losses in March.

A .786 SV% on the PK is beyond horrendous.

I’m showing some poor trends. Stating some over rated players (Rielly) pointing out management played two hurting goalies knowing full well it was dangerous to do so. Then states he will trade a top prospect for a top forward???. Wtf

If they lose tonight, lose first place in the North. Finish a 14 game March 7-7 for .500 hockey at the cost of 25% of the season.

Or maybe just maybe, the Leafs win tonight and have a 3 point lead with a game in hand.

Add to that their special teams are also top tier and just the way they play the game .They play the same sort of fast pace , high skill , 5 man possession game we try to play but they play a bigger and stronger much more physical version . Watch them next time they play Vegas and you will shake your head in awe , both teams can play that game better than we can .

That's interesting, thanks. I'll keep an eye out and next time these two play and the game is shown on the channels I get, I will definitely watch if I have the time.

Well I would like to see them punish anybody in front of the net. Similar to how Mathews gets hacked and whacked when he is in front of the opposition net.

I would too. I can't help but feel like we're still lacking in the toughness department and winning without that in the playoffs is going to be tough (no pun intended).

I would like our guys to be a little more feisty, especially when other teams start stuff, but for what it’s worth we really don’t allow a whole lot in front of our net:

TOR

I don’t know if this is because opposing teams don’t go to the front of our net often, or maybe we do a good job preventing shots in the crease. If opponents are getting to the front of our net, we’re doing something to limit the danger.

Agreed. I am not sure what Simmonds or even Thornton has done to merit any opportunity on any PP units
If they need size just put Engvall up there, he has decent hands and at least can pass the puck and good on puck retrievel

I am actually very sick of seeing Rielly on any PP unit. He simply doesn't have the shot or any fear factor at all.
Teams just focus on Matthews knowing there is no shot coming from the point

He's a classic case of a player who is being set up to succeed. He gets to play in all good opportunities when he deserves maybe half of it

Glass is always half-empty eh? Must be exhausting to always live with some imaginary worst case scenario.

Yep and we still have two fragile goalies and a G.M betting his season on them so he can trade a top prospect for a top 6 forward we don’t need. His words.
Once again, would you then prefer James Reimer again? Or the corpse of Devan Dubnyk and whatever he has left? Or an unproven Antii Raanta? Because those are the best three goalies known to be available at the deadline.

Thank goodness he was .936 with a 1.84 GAA when it mattered.
Yeah, thank goodness for that elite 5 game sample size amongst two calendar years of below average goaltending.

He's turned into Martin Jones without the playoff success. Lucky us!

Realllly wish Dubas would pull the trigger on a trade for another top six forward and unload Kefoot and his center ice skating clinics. Maybe someone else to slot in on the pp besides Simmonds/Thornton...

They could run a 1A/1B with Campbell with someone like Bernier, Ullmark, Raanta, or Reimer and expect better than Andersen's .897 SV%. Hell, Kuemper or Hill would be nice too.

Pretty sure these are the lineups. With GSVA from theathletic.com.

Since theathletic.com doesn't give me updated goalie numbers I decided to make my own- I put in the average of the last 2yrs of WAR for each goalie from evolving-hockey.com. Not a great measure but useful enough and gives me a number that looks superficially on the same scale as the GSVA for skaters.

Even in those 5 games, he was clearly the third best goalie behind the Columbus goalies lol. That Foudy goal still haunts my nightmares...don't even care how bad that shift change was, how do you give up that goal from that angle.

As much as I love Brodie on defense he's not that great in the o-zone.
I'd like to see Muzzin, but on that second PP with that unit is a shorthanded breakaway waiting to happen.

Wonder if that Tavares twice is a typo, I'm assuming Simmonds is likely on PP2

-give up fewer odd man rushes
-improve on boxing out players in front our net
-stop deflecting pucks into out own net
This is actually a pretty good recent article about rush chances: Which Teams are Relying on the Rush?

The Leafs are pretty good at limiting rush chances in general. There isn’t anything specific about odd man rushes, but if we were allowing too many odd man rushes against, you’d think our %of rush goals against would be much worse than it is.

I posted above about the net front thing. We actually don’t allow very many shots from the slot are are better than league average (while playing in an offence heavy division).

Is there any evidence our defensmen deflect pucks into their own net at a higher rate than normal?

People might be surprised how high muzzin ranks in even strength dman offense since he came to he leafs. I'd say he should be on the #2 pp for sure.
