Interesting to see how this will work

X-Matthews-88
X-JT-Marner
Soup-X-X
Engvall-Spezza-Simmonds

Am I forgetting anyone?

I pretty much expect Kerfoot to get claimed by Seattle

Marner, Soup, Engvall are the only PK guys.
There are better 3c options that will come in much cheaper. More like leaf fans are hoping they take him.

Probably a harmless re-signing. I would not be surprised if he is barely able to play 50 total games over the course of the deal. But that doesn't mean he couldn't have a positive impact in those 50 games.

Maybe they signed him as a favor hoping Seattle would claim him? Dunno, bad signing.

A player for 900K is hard to call a “bad signing” tbh. I know we are all pissed at the team, and rightfully so, but this is a average signing. It’s nothing to call home about.

This is a dollar amount that pre-injury Simmonds can outplay and provide value.

If he plays like he did post-injury, then he should be the 13th forward and 900K is a fine salary for that, or at worst, off the roster completely and the contract doesn’t matter except for MLSE’s spreadsheets

A higher, total payout for the player from the previous contract, but spread out over two seasons to keep the AAV down. Fair enough compromise. Hopefully this works out well for the team.

He didn’t look good after his injury

If he plays like he did pre-injury it’ll look good. If not, he shouldn’t be in the lineup but Keefe will probably put him in the top 6 and first PP unit lmao

Tough to complain when he's making over a million but is he really worth that little extra bit over the minimum salary weird

I don’t think He’s not leaving MTL. why would he? Stanley cup finals vs first round exit. Easy choice for him

Could have said that this most recent summer too.

SCF with Dallas but wanted to come here.

He nearly left Anaheim when he was close to UFA to come here but we sucked so he re-signed.

He doesn't even have to show up in the regular season. We need him for the playoffs when players start playing for real.

Am neither happy or sad about this signing. if he can bring some jam to his game and be a shit disturber it might work out.

the only player we had besides Hyman who would go to the net, take the beating and create havoc in the opposition blue paint. one can only hope that his energy rubs on the money mitch but... hope and leafs are not a good combo

We're always complaining that the Leafs are one of the softest, most non physical teams in the entire NHL and poorly equipped for playoff style hockey.

Well Simmonds in not one of those players so at least there is that, if that was the main objective behind this signing.

At his age and declining health over the years he should be seen more a depth 4th line piece and 12/13th forward that adds a little grit to the bottom of the roster.

Projected Leafs 4th line 2021-22

Wayne Simmonds -- Adam Brooks -- Jason Spezza

I'll take that line if we have a 3rd line of Goodrow Kuraly Coleman.

I guess the extra year is to lower the average so I guess that makes sense. A big 'meh' from me as he didn't really seem to move the needle at all after his injury. Hopefully they play him in a 4th line role.

That's very likely how this contract played out ..

He had a $1.5 mil AAV deal X 1 year last year, and now that he is nearing the end of his career at 33, he traded that for 2 years guaranteed @ $900 AAV per or $1.8 mil total.

If Leafs wanted a lower annual AAV they need to add a 2nd year to compensate as this is likely his last NHL contract.

Good point I completely forgot about him being on that Dallas team. I guess there is a chance! Let’s hope we actually give him a shot

a 4th of Simmonds-spezza- Perry would be nice!
