Thornton should not have skated away. He's a big guy and he's not doing much else out there on the ice anyways.
Matthews needs to think about whether or not it's worth it for him to risk taking himself out of the game for 2-5 minutes, or even out of the series with a hand injury.
He's got way way way too much to offer by staying in the game. We don't need another Kadri or a Clarkson move, especially from our best player.
For sure, Marner was the much bigger issue for us this year. AM's game and physicality moved forward, even if he didn't get much to show for it.
While I acknowledge that it's a lot easier for a fan sitting on the sidelines to say a player should go through the wall for his team or do X, Y, Z, than it is to actually do it on the ice, I think your comments completely the point of what competition is supposed to look like.
If a player is constantly running mental cost benefit calculations of whether they should risk themselves in certain moments of the game or self preserve and live to fight another day because they are such a precious talent, it becomes very clear very quickly that it's never worth it to take on any risk whatsoever.
The logic goes, why go in the corner or block the shot, or absorb the hit to eat the puck or make the diving poke check or stick up for a teammate or any of the rough and tumble aspects of the game? Just launch the puck into the stands, take a delay of game and worry about it later. All the other hard stuff? That should be someone else's job. Someone beneath you.
The outcome is you stay spotless and you can play healthier than maybe you would have, but it makes you easier to play against, easier to intimidate and push out of the game and ruins team cohesion. Our top guys are supremely talented but I don't think there's a level of talent that you can have where you don't get your hands dirty sometimes. Opponents know this. They lean on the Leafs a little and they crumple up.
