While I understand your overall point, I'll say that the term being too low is the problem rather than the AAV being too high. I'd have been perfectly fine with Matthews being the league's highest paid player on a deal of max term (or very close to it).

Auston Matthews clearly ups his intensity in the playoffs significantly. I don't know what some are talking about. It's difficult to tell whether it's the regular season or the playoffs watching other star players on this team.

I guess the good news is that it really isn't that massive of a raise off his already huge contract. Slightly under 2 million a year raise is manageable with a rising cap....my biggest worry is that with this deal that any chance of Willy taking a market rate deal went flying out the window. I find it pretty hard to believe Willy is going to just happily take what he should be getting after this.

If you don't see the distinction between Auston and Tavares' contracts, the player the Leafs are getting for each of the deals, the circumstances under which they were signed, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe stick to baseball?

As for the deal, hate the term. Big flop again by MLSE.

I absolutely love it. We have him for five years of his prime and can see where we are. His wrist may blow up and reduce his impact eventually so i actually like the shorter term.
A shorter term is truly a double edged sword for Papi.

Actually the leafs are protected if he has a chronic wrist injury and not locked in for 9 more years.

This makes no sense. They didn't sign for the same cap %. Matthews signed twice under a higher cap than McDavid. Matthews also had more accolades than McDavid did when he signed on this contract.

Essentially, if Matthews signed a 9 year - 12.355M contract on a higher cap after McDavid does 12.5M X 8 on a lower cap - would you be happier?

I am OK with this deal. We all knew the AAV was going to start in the 13's. We don't have to agree with it, but that's just the market for a player of Auston's caliber unfortunately.

At the end of the day, we just resigned the best Maple Leaf of all time for another 4 seasons. This gives us a comfortable 5 more years of this competing window. I am OK with that.

Get Willy sorted out soon, and I will be a happy camper

If AM wins the Cup in the next few yrs as a Leafs, I could careless if his next contract with the Leafs 4mil higher than the next player for 8yrs
