Maybe people just don't think Matthews should have become the highest paid player in the league on a 4 year deal and would've preferred a lower amount to make it easier to build a winning team around him. They were if you compare them at the time of signing.

McDavid signed after a 30 goal, 100 point career best season and got a higher cap hit on a shorter term.

I am taking this contract all day. For nylander, offer him 4 years too and say it is for 9 mill. He is definitely 4 mill less a player then matthews.

A huge part of that is because the cap didnt rise for JT's contract but also as he was a few years older than Matthews at the time. No one expected JT to get paid more AAV on his next contract when he signed, it was his last big contract, but Matthews will most likely get more than his 13.25 million when that contract expires in 5 years.

To be honest, this cap percentage stuff is just fans using it to defend the signing.

The question is still the same, is this AM market value compare to his peers and I don’t think he is worth more than Mack who signed a yr ago with the cap being 1.5mil less. He is worth more than Pastra but not by 2mil or whatever the percentage is.

Playoff wise hes the 3rd to 4th best player through 50 games.

Reg season no one can keep up with him

We resigned our best player. Simple has that. We will have him for total of 11 years

Given he was making close to 12 and walking into his FA, this is the best we could do
