Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign F Auston Matthews to extension (4 years, $13.25M AAV)

Pros:
1. 5 more years of Auston Matthews
2. Has a chance to score 500 career goals in a Leafs' jersey before this deal expires which would be a franchise first.
3. Not just protection for Matthews against salary cap inflation also protection for the Leafs in the event that Matthews' production abates.
4. Benchmark is now set for the other upcoming contracts.
 
I don't know why Matthews gets so much hate.

He just signed for the Leafs for 9 years for under the same AAV McDavid got for 8. His caps were much higher when he signed - but you'd think he's making 20% X 8 by the comments here.

There’s no benefit to the leafs here. Just to Matthews.

Every other super star player could act this selfishly to maximized every last penny, but none of them do.

What the f*** went wrong with this core? Is the franchise genuinely just cursed? Did rookie Dubas create an environment of entitlement? What the hell happened?

Mcdavid is the greatest to 3rd player to ever play

Matthew is 50-75 range

I absolutely love it. We have him for five years of his prime and can see where we are. His wrist may blow up and reduce his impact eventually so i actually like the shorter term.
A shorter term is truly a double edged sword for Papi.

Did Chicago love toews at 10.5 the last 4-5 years? 5 years with the remaining year is an eternity in hockey.
 
The extreme positive in this deal… we don’t have to watch Matthews play this whole season and become an UFA.

Imagine these boards posting about Auston the Rental?

Well, then the question is does he deserves this cap percentage?

To be honest, this cap percentage stuff is just fans using it to defend the signing.

The question is still the same, is this AM market value compare to his peers and I don’t think he is worth more than Mack who signed a yr ago with the cap being 1.5mil less. He is worth more than Pastra but not by 2mil or whatever the percentage is.

I honestly don't know how you have a problem with this.

It's only a 1.75 millon per raise and it buys you an extra 4 years to see if this team can finally make a deep Run and if they can't by year 3 of his contract you can always trade Matthews to a contender and get a boat load in return.

#1C locked up for the next 5 years at least. A little worried about Marners next contract because he'll be demanding a similar contract. Assuming they go by pretty much their current deals that'd make Marner get around 15% of the cap hit which would get him 13.8 mil when his new deal kicks in. Right?

If you don't see the distinction between Auston and Tavares' contracts, the player the Leafs are getting for each of the deals, the circumstances under which they were signed, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe stick to baseball?

As for the deal, hate the term. Big flop again by MLSE.

My hope is that means we have a 5 year window here. After that we can rebuild. This team doesn't have much a future after that anyways.

But his next deal will be sign in the summer before his last year like now which makes him 29 going to 30.
