I agree but we all know this. Contracts are on regular season performance alone. Playoff performances don’t mean anything in contract negotiations. If they did Justin Williams would have been the most paid NHLer.

Regular season wise Matthews is one of the best goal scorers. Plays Center, price to be paid. I don’t love it but whatever he’s here for 4 more years we can stop worrying now!

They signed pretty much close to the same cap percentage.

Players don’t care about the number anymore. When the negotiate they negotiate the cap percentage and they use whatever number falls on that cap percentage and work from there. Times have changed.

Every time one of our greedy 3 signs a deal it's all about the times are a changing until the next star signs and we see nothing has changed and these are just exceptionally greedy players

It’s perfectly fine. 4 years at the end of this year means 5 more years of AM34 anchoring the franchise. 13.25 is fine for an aav as the cap will skyrocket after this year

Contracts are also based on our value. He's the last player to win a Calder after like 40 years and last one to win mvp after same time

He's the face of this franchise. He has done for this team what we uses to envy other teams

Personally I like the term. Leafs are not locked into his declining 30’s. If they haven’t won a cup when there’s 1 year left, trade him and begin a new rebuild.

True. Marleau managed to get multiple high priced contracts after he entered his 30s. If Matthews is still productive he can definitely parlay that into more big deals. It’s a bet on himself and as annoyed as I am at his lack of a long term commitment I hope he’s great for a long while yet.

Who cares? We already knew he wasn’t going to sign for 8 years. I don’t dwell on things I know aren’t going to happen. We don’t have to get into our feels over it, yes I would have wanted 8 years but he’s committed to the next 5 years. HES NOT LEAVING that’s all that matters

I wanted as close to 5 as possible. We got 4. That’s 5 more seasons of our star player here. In the next CBA I’m willing to bet players will do what the NBA did, 5 years as the max contract length.

I don't think the team views the players the same as the fans do (where the playoffs are concerned).
They just see then as top players that the team would be worse off without and very difficult to replace.
