We just signed our captain to a long-term deal and now he is overpaid cause he is getting older, and the fanbase hates him. Matthews probably saw that and wanted nothing to do with it.

Only reason I don't hate it is because I figured it would be for 3.
This leaves little doubt he was full of it with loving to be here and helping out the team.
