Did Chicago love toews at 10.5 the last 4-5 years? 5 years with the remaining year is an eternity in hockey.
That's 1 example, there are a shit ton of examples that show the opposite and getting your stars tied down for longer term can result in discount contracts later down the road. That's pretty much the only way you get bargains.

This type of contract there is no chance of a bargain which is exactly the reason it was structured this way, I.e. high AAV, low term so you can re-up as the cap rises as often as possible.

I wonder why. Maybe because they took every penny they could and helped ruin a legitimate chance not only at a cup, but at a dynasty. Not 100% their fault as the covid cap freeze was unforeseen, but no excuses here.

Imagine if we still had Hyman and literally who knows who else to compliment this current roster.

Tavares took less.

Why didn't Hyman take less to stay? Not a true hometown boy

Plus Hyman is rich. His dad bought a league so he could play the sport

So his performance relative to his peers doesn't matter? The number of years don't matter? You're touting this as a win because he's only the highest paid player on a technicality in your eyes? Well have fun with that, but you don't really need to talk down to everyone else who's in disagreement with you

What performance matters? Tell me.

Playoff points? 200 foot game in the playoffs? Winning? Individual awards?

Lay out what should be counted and I will point out numerous peers that he has outperformed in that regard and justify his contract.

His contract is fine, I wanted 1-2 more years, but the AAV is fine, he barely got a raise (no one cares about AAV)

I get what you’re saying but that’s the problem with hockey culture and hockey players and this stupid salary cap. McDavid is very underpaid.

It sucks for us that we have players that know their value compared to athletes around the world and want to be compensated on par with that. It sucks because we are in a closed cap system so having that mindset pisses off fans. But I would never not be pro athlete. More stars in the NHL should demand to be paid appropriately the owners/bettman have gotten away with undervaluing the stars for so long.
I personally think the other stars have it more right. At the end of the day, the difference between, say, $170 mil and $190 mil career earnings means literally nothing for Matthews, he will not get one ounce more happiness. But winning a cup in Toronto, breaking the drought and becoming an absolute hockey legend, that’s a life defining accomplishment. I think guys who take small team discounts recognize this, while Matthews doesn’t.

Wouldn't it be nice to get your players tied down for 8 years like every other team it seem?

Really really dont like this. Worst of both worlds paid super high AAV and didn't even get the term
Why do you want 34/35 year old Auston at 13 million? That's not even smart business, based on his health.

his cap hit is also 1% higher, and 1.5% assuming the cap increase was factored into the contract (I am sure it was).
He also signed 5-6yrs ago and was 2mil higher than the next highest contract while leading the league in points.

This makes no sense. They didn't sign for the same cap %. Matthews signed twice under a higher cap than McDavid. Matthews also had more accolades than McDavid did when he signed on this contract.

Essentially, if Matthews signed a 9 year - 12.355M contract on a higher cap after McDavid does 12.5M X 8 on a lower cap - would you be happier?

This is assuming Matthews deserved the cap % he got.

If he had signed a 12.355 x 9 (15.5% of the cap), that would have been a gross overpayment.

Even now, MacKinnon took 15.27% and Matthews took 15.87% along with a shorter term.

At the end of the day, matthews could have gotten 15-16 on open market next summer.

I am taking this contract all day. For nylander, offer him 4 years too and say it is for 9 mill. He is definitely 4 mill less a player then matthews.
Realistically they have to wait to free up cap space to build the team into a contender, and they didn't give themselves much time to get it done.

Hyman is rich from birth. Shoulda taken league min to stay with the Leafs. He don't need the money.

That's a flawed argument. Just beacuse someone is rich doens't mean they shouldn't exercise their potential to earn money
Hyman was a good soldier. He paid his due, worked his ass off and got paid. Lets move on from him

Yes you’re correct I’m defending our star player resigning here lol. I don’t care about other players or other teams what they do.
Bro, don’t get me wrong, I love the Leafs like you. But for once, just wish the players feel the same way and actually do the Leafs a solid and get their market value instead of what they think they are worth.
