I'm saying if you combine Matthews two contracts - would you be happier?

McDavid signs 8 years x 12.5M coming off a career high 100 point season on a lower cap.
Matthews signed 9 years x 12.355M coming off multiple rockets + Hart + Ted Lindsay on a higher cap.
I am not going to go look at all your previous posts unless you are replying to me.

So when you said that McD signed for shorter deals, I asked how bc he signed for 8yrs.

Also, stop comparing McD to AM bc McD is on different planets and he also signed 2mil more than the next highest paid players.

New management same as the old management. Top money without term. Better than letting him walk I suppose, but you can't build a winner if you keep doing this.

Okay and McDavid's next contract is going to be signed in 2 years. Want to bet it's over 13.25M?

Why do you compare McDavid's contract at 20 to Matthews at 25 under a higher cap? Is every player for the rest of history supposed to be under 12.5M regardless of the cap?

You know MacKinnon makes more than McDavid too - right?

Glad they didn't go beyond 4 years.

This is a safe term, hopefully.

So he'll be 27 when it kicks in and next deal he'll be 31 ... depending on his results another 4 year deal could end after a decline in value.

It's not ideal by any means. It's also not a disaster.

He's locked up on the team for the next 5 season with this extension, which is great. The caphit is also acceptable, especially given the expected cap jump over the next two seasons
Agreed its not a disaster to the cap now, but it also just shows alot about the players' priority (singular form on purpose lol).

The issue with thinking that way is that his original post ELC contract would then be viewed as a 11.634 x 4, which is atrocious.

I have been comparing AM’s contract to Mack the whole time.

5-6 was ideal for me, but 8 years never made sense.

Same people cursing Tavares and hoping we signed Matthews just as long.

No where in league charter does it say one cannot get paid more than Mack
He got paid because he's the best player and talent we have had since we drafted Frank Mahovlich
A home grown player, MVP, calder. All those still matters
Nowhere, but where has he shown that he deserves to be paid more than MacKinnon? And I don't care about regular season awards, MacK has led his team to a Cup, Matthews hasen't.
Nathan Mackinnon isn't a FA next year. Auston Matthews is. His contract came up first the got paid what will be the new standard

Is it fair, no. Is it life, yes
So you agree he's overpaid once again?

Number seems fine, pretty much aa rumoured. Feels like the 5th year would have been perfect but oh well

The problem most have is the best player in the world signed for 8 years in Edmonton and not 1 of our star players have. Tavares did but he was 27 or 28 when he signed the deal as a FA.

I like the four years. With his ongoing wrist issues, it doesn’t commit is too long, if the problems persist, or the group doesn’t find a way to perform in the playoffs. If he’s healthy and performs, the cap is going up anyway. I wanted a $12 mil range, but this isn’t far off.

Okay, let's compare the players:

Matthews awards: 2x Rockets, Calder, Hart, Ted Lindsay
MacKinnin awards: Calder, Lady Byng

Edge to MacKinnon?
PPG over the last few seasons gives the edge to MacKinnon. Stanley Cup I'd say helps too

Matthews has committed more years to the Leafs than McDavid to Edmonton at this point, and he still has the option to retire a Leaf.

Could be better, could be worse. He's a mercenary, but a very good one. Here's to hoping the team gets the right mix of players to surround him with.

Made past the first rounds of playoffs more than ONCE in the past 7 yrs.

Doesn’t have another 10mil plus line mates or another 10mil plus 2C to play with on a regular basis.

Also led his team to a Cup.
