Minnesota

Columbus

Detroit

Washington

Probably Seattle

Vejmelka over Samsonov easily so Arizona

Edmonton even though I'm not fully sold on their goaltending either.

Carolina

Possibly Montreal.

All these teams have at least 1 goaltender that I'd take over Samsonov right now and if not for the Carter Hart situation Philadelphia would be there too.

And before you bring up Woll Samsonov is the one being used because he is the current starter.
Why are we taking Woll out of the equation? He's practicing with the team and will be back soon.

I won't bother debating about Anaheim, Pitts, LA and Washington, as I see that as a toss up. What I will say is I take ours over there's based on contracts.

Minnesota - at this point, why do you see Gus as an upgrade over Woll? He's played more games but Woll has better numbers and has been more consistent. Fleury is average at best as a backup at best at this point at 39 yrs old. Samsonov is back to normal now and will have similar numbers to Fleury or better by the end of the year with this continued play. Jones has better numbers than both Gus and Fleury as well.

Columbus - their best goalie has a .904sv%. How is that a better goalie situation?

Detroit - they have 3 career backup goalies. 2 which have sub .900sv%. You view Alex Lyon with his .911sv% as the guy that would be an upgrade on what we have?

Seattle - Daccord is having a great year but is 27 yrs old and is having his first season above a .900sv%. Is this just a one off year for him? Did you forget Sammy was 6th in the league last year for sv% and in his career has an average of a .904sv%. How is Daccord an upgrade on anyone we have? Grubauer hasn't been above a .900sv% in 3 years.

Arizona - Vejmelka's best year was a .900sv% and is barely beating out Sammy's numbers this year. How is he an upgrade over any of our 3 guys? Ingram has been a solid backup this year and last but again, how are these 2 an upgrade on what we have?

Edmonton - Skinner is basically in the same tier as Woll. Both guys just scratching the surface and comparable numbers. Pickard is playing in the NHL for the first time in 3 yrs at the age of 31 and the last time he has had above a .900sv% in the NHL was back in 2017. Campbell, no explanation needed. How would these 3 be an upgrade on our 3?

Carolina - Kochetkov is similar to Woll in that they are young guys with potential and just breaking into the league but he doesn't even have close to Woll's number despite playing on a way better defensive squad. Raanta and Andersen are probably the 2 most injury prone goalies in the league and neither are above a .900 sv% on a better defensive squad. How is their situation better than ours? They're a contender looking for a goalie too.

Montreal - Jake Allen has been a career backup and has below average numbers the last few years at the age of 33. Montembault is having his best year and is their best goalie right now with a .903sv%............

Because I can't compare Woll to those goalies because he's not playing, Samsonov is the current starter he's the one playing.

Comparing an injured goalie doesn't make sense.

All the talk of Markstrom on the move I have to think Tre would be making some calls?

I mean I know he's 34 but how else do we get goaltending?

It's not like Woll is like Murray and is out for the year. He'll likely be back in the next week or so. Why would we take Woll out of the conversation when comparing to the goalie situation of other teams? Other teams have goalies injured too and I still used them in my comparables.

Even if you take him out, Jones still has better numbers than almost all the goalies I mentioned. Samsonov is back to playing good hockey and has a .917sv% in his last 8 starts since Januray. I don't see an issue with he goaltending right now with Woll out. The bigger concern is Rielly being out and our best D man is now either McCabe or Benoit. Yikes.

Realistically anyone could outbid us for anything at this point.

We aren't exactly flush with expendable assets.
Outside of our first rounder, the only prospects of high value to other teams are Cowan, Minten, Grebenkin and Niemela. All guys we need going forward, especially Niemela. He's the only D man in our pool that truly has top 4 potential.

It's not worth gutting our pool and future to fix one of many holes on a team that doesn't look promising for this year.

Nashville wants on overpayment

Assets and Cap need to be spent on Defense

Win or lose tonight I have been proven right again, just like I was with Campbell, and Sparks, and Hutchinson and now Samsonov.

He's awful and a few solid games doesn't change that fact.

He certainly wasn't great and obviously didn't win the game for the team. I wouldn't consider that start to be awful though.

I don't need to defend the narrative his numbers on the season do that for me.
Ok, please use those numbers you rely on and let me know what happens when you take a look at Sammy's play up to Dec. 29 game vs CBJ, and how things have been trending since his start vs Detroit on Jan 14th.

Oh, what the heck, the difference: .814% vs .907%

Those numbers suggest the narrative has changed.

Which is not me saying that Samsonov is a god between the pipes, but that sometimes things do change for the better, and imo his play has improved since they put him on waivers. And please, sometimes context matters more than absolute takes on numbers. Was he at fault for the deflection tonight? Or the snipe by Guenther? Had AM scored on a shot like that we'd be marveling at the skill and saying the goalie had no chance.

Auston Matthews and Guenther are very VERY not the same thing Auston Matthews is a mutant.

Do late trade goalies ever work? I am old and can’t remember

I don't remember a team ever acquiring a starting goaltender (who took over the job) being acquired at the deadline. I think if your goalie is good enough to get your team to the playoffs, he's good enough to be your starter for the playoffs. I'm not a GM (obviously) so perhaps their line of thought is much different; this is only my observation.
