Leafs need to address the goaltending.

I don't need to defend the narrative his numbers on the season do that for me.

You’ve demonstrated a repeated inability to understand numbers and read plays to determine where the problems are, and how goals occurred. You actually posted about Samsonov after a tipped shot ended up as a goal. That’s comically erroneous. You’ve repeatedly lacked an ability to read our often terrible team defensive play, and blamed the goalie. There have been times we’ve given up way too many high danger shots, and times our xGA is higher than actual goals, and you’ve blamed the goalie for that. Last night, our expected goals, and actual were virtually the same.

Yes, there have also been times Samsonov has been terrible, but the key is understanding when that is, and when it isn’t, and you just don’t know at all.

By all means, keep posting comical stuff, demonstrating that you don’t understand what is happening in games.

Sammy is now 8-2, with a .913sv% since going on waivers. 5 of those games with one guy who is a legitimate top 4 d man. But yeah the goalie is a problem lol.

Sorry but I am not sold on our goaltending in a low scoring, defensive game. Hope we can score 4/5 in the playoffs each game.
Are you referring to the current goaltending, Sammy/Jones, or Woll?

Even though Jones has been better than expected, and Sammy has been playing well since coming back from waivers, I'm with you on those two - wouldn't want either to be our starter in the playoffs. Sammy is just so unpredictable/unreliable, and Jones is like a borderline #2/3. But Woll, I've really liked his game, both with the Leafs and Marlies, regular season and playoffs. Small NHL sample size, but I'm happy to roll with him as the starter, and he'll be back soon.

The alternative is trying to find a better starting goalie than Woll via a trade deadline move, and that seems like a stretch. Some goalies will be available, but probably not any goalies better than Woll.

There are at least 2 that are available that are better than Woll right now.

The Leafs waffled on the goaltending position yet again this year.

Opting to go with an unproven Samsonov. Along with the broken and crippled body of Joseph Woll. The result: questions about the stability of the most important position of the entire sport heading down the stretch.

And doubt about the team's ability to make it past the first round again.

There were all kinds of questions about goaltending entering the season. There is every year. But this year was extra special

Because of the particular goaltenders Treliving chose to run with.

An injury prone career backup, who's about as mentally fragile as an egg, was supposed to be starter. And an injury prone rookie was going to be his backup. Along with the worst goalie in the league last year for relief.

I doubt even Treliving thinks that's a Stanley Cup winning combination.

Both teams are in a tough spot in the standings, though.
Would Nashville take a chance on Askarov getting them through the season and into the playoffs? I would do it, especially if got someone like Woll back in a trade.

I don't think Treliving will acquire a goalie, but this would be an interesting lineup backstopped by a guy like Markstrom or Saros. In the end, I think it will still be Woll and Samsonov.

I think it will be too and I don't like it.

But regardless they will have choice but to bring in a goalie before next season because both Samsonov and Jones are free agents at seasons end and I HIGHLY doubt either is coming back, which means at least 1 guy has to come in before next season.

As for Woll we will see about his health this is his 2nd ankle injury.

He's shown promise for sure but the health is a concern.

Fully agree - no question that a goalie will be needed in the summer because I don't think they will bring back either Samsonov or Jones, but I don't think you can look that far forward right now (be it for goalies or any other position) because the outcome of the playoffs could completely change their approach. As of now, they have to make a bet on this season's goaltending without the benefit of seeing much of Woll's recovery. I think Treliving will use his assets on the defense and a third line center. I appreciate that this new third line with Tavares is working well right now, but you can't give Tavares many defensive starts in the playoffs, so I don't see him (or Domi) centering a third line deep in the playoffs.

You know who looked like shit last night? Adin Hill. You know what looked like shit last night? Vegas D. You know who was great in the playoffs last year? Adin Hill. You know what looked great in the playoffs last year? Vegas D.

I know it's simplistic to say it and there is more to it. But show me a great defence and I'll show you a great goalie. Again, more to it. But I'm not sold Markstrom or Saros moving the needle too much more than what is currently here if the defence in front of them plays mediocre to poor.

My issue with the goalies and the sport in general is this. Again, simplistic example. But. In baseball, if you are going up against Gerrit Cole. You won't be expecting to score more than 1 or 2 runs. If before the game he gets hurt and needs to be replaced by an below average spot starter. That starter is giving up 5 runs in 2 innings and it's a completely different script.

In hockey, the good goalie is still letting in 2. His replacement is letting in 3. And hey maybe 2 vs. 3 is the difference between winning and losing. And I get it. Having an on-form Vasilevskiy vs AHL fodder is quite the advantage and there is more to it than 2 goals vs. 3 goals.

But like.... the margin is way thinner. And when this margin costs assets and cap space, which is what we would be dealing with. Maybe the assets are better spent on something with a wider margin aka defence. Take away cap and assets, hell yes get me the best and/or at least better goalie. But with what these goalies would cost, you need to adjust expectations. Markstrom and Saros are still going to let in shit goals too. And they will let in more of them if the defence in front of them is shit.

.900 Sv% during this 7 game winning streak.

Colorado won a cup with average to below average goaltending like this, but that was a rare exception to the norm in the playoffs, where lights out goaltending often carries the day.

Anything 'expected' is a perfect example of how moronically stupid these allegedly 'advanced' stats are. 'Expected' doesn't mean jack s**t. Reality matters, not fantasy.

900 save% says A LOT more about the offense than the goaltending, it says the offense is carrying the goaltending.

Of the 69 goalies who have played at least 10 games, Samsonov ranks 67th with a Sv% of .881

By comparison: Soderblom is at .877, with a record of 2-17-1, whereas Samsonov is 14-5-6

I don't think Markstroms the answer. It's Woll time

You sure about that? I hope you are right I really do, I would LOVE for him to turn out to be a legitimate #1 goaltender, and truthfully from what he showed it looks promising.

However I don't trust his health, I need my #1 goalie to be healthy and he's missed nearly 3 months, and this isn't his first ankle injury either.

I would HAPPILY take the L on this one if he turns into that dude.

I just don't know if he's going to be healthy enough to be that dude.
