You'd think it's rather positive problem to have that we have Malgin and Robertson really fighting for that spot in the second line. Where it seems that both deserve it and can play there. No need to bash one or another. It's interesting take to bash the GM that acquired both of them to make a bad choice on this. He in the first place put us into place, where we really have to pick our guys from large crop.

If we're too stacked you'd hope that we could turn some of that depth into assets rather than losing all of them to waiwers. Though it's preseason...

Too bad the Leafs missed signing the kid on D playing for the Habs. Not even going to try to spell his name. Local kid who went undrafted. They could use that toughness on the backend. Big kid. Nasty.
I think he may be a Klingon. Has a Klingon name and looks like a Klingon.

Re the embellishmen: the Habs ran a pick play at the Leafs blueline on a rush when they already had an extra skater due to a delayed penalty. It really was a clear case of interference anyways but I guess Marner decided to help the refs to make the right decision by falling over rather easily. It was a bit iffy, in my judgment but, hey, I’m a Leaf’s fan.
Pick plays are very rarely called except in for the oddly specific scenario of the Justin Holl pick last year in Game 7 that would have led to a tying goal.

When Mike Babcock coached the Red Wings, he developed a tactic that would free up space for a stretch pass by having Red Wing players set picks at strategic locations. Was never called for it.

At this point you just have to realize that’s the player he is and he’s not going to change.
Or the one tweeting could try to learn hockey and that there is other ways to defend and control the game then headless checking when being 1 on 3. Or get pinned and give the other team an advantage.

People rather want him to get pinned and leafs scored on, because then he cared. Then doing the safest smarter thing in that situation.

The most stupid thing of all is that some people think getting rid of Nylander will win us a cup. He is the sole reason for us not winning a cup. And the same people claim being more educated in hockey then myself. The only one player that can tilt the game that much being realy sucky is the goalie. Any other player should a great team balance up.

I know it's only pre season but Robertson has earned an opportunity and unless he gets hurt between now an operating night he deserves a spot on this team.

The problem is where does he play? Because it doesn't look like Kerfoot is getting traded and Engvall is looking to be back soon.

There are A LOT of forwards here, because you got guys like Steeves and ZAR who deserves to be on this roster

You could make the argument for Malgain too though, I don't think he sticks full time.

You have to clear some room but who do you get rid of? The obvious answer is Kerfoot but I don't think that happens.

it's a great problem To have

Goal Scoring strong man who picks his spots? Eh you could do much MUCH worse for $7M

That‘s great! Progress, but he wouldnt make what was almost the exact play against McDonagh with 3 1/2 mins left in the season. But he made that beautiful snow shower that some say you could see a rainbow If you were at the right angle.

I always find it humorous arm chair gms who probably can't even last 10 minutes running around their block think they know more than Nylander when it comes to how to exert his energy. He knows his strengths and limitations and where he needs to keep his gas tank to do his actual job (point producer) and play a full season, so let the guy do his thing. Due to his point totals, his stick check and strength he gives you a better package of "grit + skill" and game impact than every stone hand grit player in the league. You need to start clearing 10+ mil in cap if you want to increase either of the grit or skill in their combination form. Just stop reading and comprehend that if you're a Nylander hater.

I don't see anyone jumping on bottom 6 guys because they only "selectively" score 8-10 times a year. Look at that bum turtling when it's time to score, softie.

If you need to take two of these three, who do you drop?

  1. Engvall
  2. Robertson
  3. Malgin

Our normally flyby ubertalent wins a 50-50 puck battle against a plodding undrafted junior overager who has never played a regular season professional game in his life and that's a cause for celebration? I'll start getting excited when it's Victor Hedman or Brandon Carlo or Aaron Ekblad.

Malgain he is what he is.

Robertson is 4 years younger can can still grow.

Engvall is a major part of the PK.

It's Malgin... not Malgain.... though I agree with you, if one of the three has to be dropped...

Only scenario where I might diverge, is if they think Malgin is good enough to play with Nylander and Tavares... so they play the asset management game. Maybe he isn't better than Robertson, but if you play Malgin 10-20 games, up his value, you might be able to trade him for something of value. Then move Robertson up with Nylander and Tavares.

Malgin. Robertson is your prospect, and his upside is much higher, he’s also done exactly what we’ve asked. Engvall has done nothing to lose a job. Malgin, I’m not falling in love with pond hockey preseason, it isn’t that representative. He’s a nifty player, but he probably passes through waivers, people seem to think he was some hot commodity to get to camp, he wasn’t. Good depth, but I take a chance losing Malgin.

In any other scenario you drop Malgin, but in this scenario it's Robertson. Asset management is huge. Dropping Robertson won't lose you a player and he leads the way in a pretty good Marlie team for a full year. We can flip Malgin at the deadline and call Robby back up.

Malgins going to have a 20g 50pt season this year IMO

If you go back and watch the game you will see he threw a few checks in the first period, and played a little more physical than normal.

Hopefully it continues. If he plays like he did in the World Championships last year it IS a big plus for the Leafs.

Neither has played 0 minutes of regular season hockey this year. There is scenario where Buffalo claims Malgin, he goes scoring 10 points in his first 10 games there and Robertson struggles in second line. Malgin has played 200 games in this league and has progressed after that. No one really knows what his capable of, so I'd rather take flyer with both and go from there. They have deserved their chances at the moment, but we have few preseason games left. Robertson has maybe higher ceiling, but it is yet to be seen if he can reach it.

There is a chance that putting Malgin in waiwers end up being terrible asset management. There are no easy decision, since I think we have to mostly think about building cup winner, this season. So you keep Kerfoot, if needed etc.

Don't even need to think about this one. You drop Malgin. I don't like Engvall at his cap but he's at least more useful than Malgin and you can give him a role to do towards well oil machine team with his long reach and long skating strides.

Malgin is like those players we used to fill the lineup with like Santorelli so the league doesn't fine us for not trying to dress a good roster. It's weird people are holding onto his points against these AHL rosters. He's bubble to lottery team top 6 option and nothing stands out for the "utility" style skills.

Where is Robertsons case you ask. I feel it an insult to Robertson to have to make a case why he's the guy over malgin for anything offense relate.
