and somehow led the team to its best season in franchise history. ...with a real starting goalie, we'll be something special i guess.
Jack Campbell only started 47 games of an 82 game season, which is what one would expect from a tandem goalie plan of 1A and 1B with no real starter.

Now both Campbell and Mrazek have a long list of injury problems and I'm not sure the goalie coach is to blame for that unless his teaching techniques are leading to them somehow.,

Freddy Andersen started 66 games during Leafs previous best season and would have started even more if not missing some time also to injury that year back in 2017-18.

Steve Briere in his 7 years in Toronto he helped both Frederik Andersen and Jack Campbell reach the NHL All-Star Game. Campbell had a strong start to the season going 21-6-3 with a 2.30 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in 33 games before the All-Star Game, while leading the NHL in goals above expected.

Apparently in the handshake line this year Briere didn't earn the same respect as other coaches did, :wg:

They should hire one of those Finnish goalie coaches that the Russians poached, leading to guys like Vasilevskiy and Shesterkin.
Money does talk, but will any of them want to cross the pond to this much hype for a goalie coach? Dude's probably gonna have improve his mic game ;)

Agree 100%. Seen enough boy wonders ratting out the world when their vision begins to get a bit foggy.

he also helped Campbell become an AHL-level goalie for half the season, have to give him credit for both things.

I don't know how much influence he has in the development of our goalies, but that is what I am more concerned with.

I think it is probably much harder to change the habits a 29 year old goalie than it is of a 18 year old, I want a team of coaches to come in and be good at developing our goalie prospects. Draft for athletism and then develop the fundamentals would be ideal, I think that is what separates the good from the great.

Tender development much like skating development is done in ones formative years .. by time of junior it becomes mostly positioning and awareness of situations .. there is slight improvements in technique but most of time it is really improving core strength with training .. if you really want to develop as a skater or a tender invest HEAVILY early like 6-10 years old .. there is where you can get best bang for buck .. but bottom line like McJesus and Orr you largely either have it or not 1st time you step on ice in terms of being GREAT.. everyone knew 1st time they saw McJesus he was gonna be da next one

No matter who it is or how it happens, you can always count on Our Mod Mess thinking every current leaf is crap, and every ex-leaf is golden.

Wonder if the guy that has followed Trotz around for 3 stops and 22 years Mitch korn can be poached?

And guess what he did the previous 7 years before joining with Trotz?
He coached Dominik Hašek to 4 Vezina trophies, and 2 Hart trophies.

When Steve Briere was hired in 2015, lots of people were puzzled when Toronto gave such a vital job to an unknown with zero NHL experience.

However in Toronto this seems to be a pattern when it comes to hiring management with NHL experience not required.

The results that have followed speak for themselves,.

I never have any idea what you are talking about

With a real starting goalie we would be a contender for the cup.
Campbell is a good 1B at best. His warts will be taken advantage of next season. As his playbook gets written teams will exploit him more.
My comment was not to say he's not a good goalie but he's not a legit starter for a cup team that is built up front to catch ntend for a cup

Thanks to @Brobust for mentioning the Mirtle article. Mirtle mentioned Briere generally did a good job and was extremely close to the goalies, but some on the organization felt maybe too close. A source mentioned he struggled to be unbiased regarding goalies.

He is still the guy I think we should consider, especially if he is leaving Russia.

He works with most of the Finns (Husso, Rask, Lankinen, etc.), and was Shestyerkin/Askarov's goalie coach in Russia. Also responsible for turning Koskinen's career around (before EDM ruined it again). Koskinen is available as a guy who may be willing to come here cheap as a backup to work with him again (if we move Mrazek).

Also, if we are intent on building a proper goalie department, he is the kind of guy that you want running it. Feel free to peruse some of the articles about him on his Twitter.

He's the #2 ranked European, #3 overall but his skill and technical ability is better than anybody else in the draft. He'll probably go later 2nd - middle 3rd somewhere.

Briere was the coach the entire time Andersen was here. Andersens first season as a Leaf was arguably his best. It was definitely the year he allowed the fewest "how did that go in" goals. And every year after got worse and worse.
I'll trust your judgment. It sound like he could be around for our 3rd.

Pretty good. Elliotte mentioned a couple names he has heard to watch. Michael Leighton for the Spitfires.
The 2nd one is Dan Cloutier. Apparently Leafs and him have talked over the years.

5'10 is hard to get over. Saros was the same size and a much more impressive prospect and he fell to the 4th. I would not be surprised to see Havelid fall to the later rounds.

He sounds like he has a good track record of developing goaltenders. But...what are his 4 pillars of goaltending? That seems to be the important question for Dubas.

Leafs keep getting "Out-Goalied" each playoffs, so it must be the goalie coach.

Of course, who knew the solution could be so simple, as the clue was right there in the title all along?

:wg:
Leaf Fans: Damn, our goalie coach sucks. Why don't we fire him and get someone better?
Leafs: We're firing the goalie coach.
Leaf Fans: MANAGEMENT JUST LOOKING FOR A SCAPEGOAT! He was doing a great job!
