They should not, but first their millennial brat GM give a massive deal to the laziest player in the team. Then he give Matthews a massive deal without max term. Marner should ask 11.5x5.

They don't see Marner making more than Kane? I don't think that is crazy.

If we're talking a 5 year deal at $10.5m then I can easily see that happening. Marner would be crazy to take 8 years at that price after the deal that Matthews signed.

If we're talking offer sheets? People need to realise how high the numbers are getting to get the four 1st round picks. There is a decent chance that a 5 year deal at $10.5m would be in the second highest compensation bracket this summer (two 1sts, a 2nd & a 3rd). A 4 year deal in that range would make sense for both sides, should a GM be willing to go down the road of an offer sheet.

There is a career 70 points player on the same team who gets 11.5m for his RFA years plus one UFA year. Marner should rightfully ask for at least the same.

And yet Matthews has a better PPG, a better GPG and plays the tougher position. Why should he get the same?

Patty Kane signed that contract 5 years ago. I don't know how much exactly the ceiling has gone up since then, but you can't compare the monetary value of a contract dollar for dollar from 5 years ago to now. But even then, Kane makes 10.5, if Marner settles at 10M/8 years, that's a huge win for him. Coming into the NHL, I doubt he expected to make that kind of money, and he's a homer too. An extra mil or so shouldn't stall negotiations too long. He's worth 9-9.5 at max term, IMO.

The whole NHLPA shouldn't be thanking McDavid. Ever since he signed his record-breaking contract, every superstar's negotiation salary range has gone significantly up
Salary cap was 69M 5 years ago, now it's roughly 83M. Patty Kane's contract took about 15,2 % of the whole Blackhawks salary cap. Nowadays he would get 12,6M.

But management is the reason the leafs are in cap hell right now and instead of being mad at management people are siding with them.

Leafs are in "cap hell" because of the Marleau contract. This current management group did not sign that.

Management thinks Marner should be compared to other wingers and not Matthews. For a centre to also be the second best goal scorer in the world is a rare talent. I don't think he's comparable to Marner.

Marner was the better player this year and you can't sign him to a 5 year deal like you did with Matthews.

It would be beyond stupid.

That's debateable! Mathews does more than fill nets and rack up points. If Matthews played a full season he would have eclipsed Marners 94 points. To top it all off Matthews was the best player in the playoffs.

The cap's gone up what, $11.5m since Kane's contract kicked in?

($83m/$71.4m) * $10.5m = $12.2m

I bet Marner would settle for $12m.

Kane's contract was also his second one after his ELC and included almost all UFA years. The first one he signed was 5 years x 6.3M

Tavares is less of an issue because UFA's are usually overpaid.

Again, I said Marner will get less than Matthews AND will sign for more term. Is that not putting Matthews at a higher value?

Maybe you are drunk so are having issues reading.
if you sign for more years you sign bigger contract.... if he signs for 5 years it's for 10M, if he signs for 7+ it's for 11.5M
