I don't see how this is so difficult. Give Marner the exact identical contract to what Matthews got. And if the Leafs don't plan on doing that, then plan on losing Mitch Marner to an offer sheet.

... did you read any of it?

if he wants to stay in Toronto he has to sign for 9.5 because the leafs can’t afford anymore

If he wants more, he’s free to go get his money somewhere else
Except you guys are going to make it work.

Imagine the Leafs keeping Nylander at 7 over Marner at 10.5 lmfao

Matthews was 42nd in points this year, 21st in PPG
Marner was 11th in points this year, 15th in PPG

Imagine saying to Marner's agent that Marner is not within 1 million of Matthews.

Deal certainly won't be done by July 1 if that is what Dubas comes in with. And even if there is no offer sheet, Dubas showed that he will cave like with Nylander. And 100% Dubas does not want the PR nightmare of Marner not playing.....with the possibility of paying him in the end anyways. Oh, and then duplicating Nylanders farce of a season.

Sign him for 11. Make him happy all summer and ready to prove Dubas right next year. Save the million elsewhere. It will be worth it.

He is a franchise winger.
He is from The GTA
He can actually stay healthy
He had a better PPG than 2 guys Dubas paid 11 million to.

Again, pay your star. It's great to have him...and have him happy. Cut from a 3rd liner to get than money. It will be worth it.

This is not a "I want the Leafs to overpay to get into cap hell". Pay your stars, it's never the issue for cap issues. It's the paying of Marleau and Zaitsev. Or like in Chicago paying Seabrook and Kruger.
What does being from the GTA have to do with anything? Lol.

Small players don't usually stay healthy.

Then you shouldnt have paid Nylander 7m.... Marner is easily going to argue he should get Matthews money when you paid Nylander 7m.
Nylander playing in training camp with a franchise center is closer to a 70 point player.

Marner not in a contract year is closer to an 80 point player.

Being from the GTA means as much as jersey sales for Matthews in the post I replied to. Very little.

Small guys....like Giroux? Unlike those big C that always stay healthy like Lindros and Malkin.

Jersey sales are tangible profits for the ppl who gave Matthews his deal.

Well this is just made up. Nylander played with thr soon to be 11.4 million franchise C, and had 61 points.

how in the actual **** can you tell me that the Matthews and Tavares contracts are overpayments and then you think it’s rational that a player who isn’t a centre and is producing at almost the same rate as J.T. and AM should be getting the same if not more...

man arguing with people on HF is like when that one drunk uncle at thanksgiving wants to talk sports after three too many bud lights on the back deck
Its just you

Cool.

You do know Dubas already stated you pay premiums for big centers and you pay premiums for goal scoring with the Matthews signing.

He already has drawn his line in the sand.
Sure. He wants to pay Marner less per point than he paid Nylander.

If we can see that, you don't think Marner and his agent see that too? Come on.

Oh....and line in the sand....like saying he wants a deal done by July 1. If Marner and his agent feel they are being underpaid, why do they sign before then? They don't.

Dubas has yet to show he can wait out anyone forcing them into a lower deal. Marner will be no different.

Let him sign the f***ing sheet, we will take the picks.

Enough is enough with these players, I will respect Dubas if he sticks to his structure on this one.

Marner will see things a bit different if he see that there is a real possibility of leaving the team he has wanted to play for since being a child.

If he doesn't care, well good riddance, and thank you for the 4 first rounders, have a great career.

You will find many Leaf fans are sick and f***ing tired of these players bullshit.

Marner is not getting as much money as Matthews no matter how much the people in this room thinks he will. Matthews is the 2nd best goal scorer in the NHL since entering the league and plays center. You're either foolish or being disingenuous if your are saying he's going to get 12mil.

The odds of him signing an offer sheet are pretty much nonexistent. He was raised here. His best friend plays here. His family and friends are here. He makes way more money in endorsements here than he would make anywhere else and this was the team he cheered for as a child. Why on earth would you sign elsewhere to end up with probably less money after endorsements amd give all that up. That without the fact it would be stupid for a team to sign him at an above market contract well giving up 41st. Most teams with th cap space to sign him are not great teams and that could end up catastrophic. The Kessel trade is which only cost 2 1st was catastropic. Ottawa giving up 1 unprotected 1st looks horrible. No team is going to risk 4 unprotected 1st. He will sign between 9 amd 10million and I'd be willing to bet money on it

Johansson and Kapanen could possibly sign one and that would make sense. If I was a G.M I'd be targeting them at around 4mil

So ungrateful. ‘You grew up a Leaf fan, take a discount or get the f*** out’

Youd think Toronto has won dozens of cups in the cap era with the stinginess for paying A top-3 producer for their club

Trying to make it seem like Marner is the bad guy, what an embarassment lol

Imagine how Matthews feels when he finds out his GM shortchanged his good friend on the team, great way to create lasting locker room chemistry

This is an... interesting strategy by Dubas. Mainly because Marner out-played and out-produced Matthews who he already gave a kings ransom to.

People need to remember that Matthews is just one of the many comparables that will come up in Marners negotiations. Matthews is a better comparison for the Brayden Point contract because they play the same position and they are both goal scorers. Better comparisons for Marners contract would be the other top wingers in the league guys like Kucherov, Pastrnak, Rantanen, Gaudreau.

So paying Marner 9 million a year is bad? is that WAYYY underpaid?

Or should I be grateful that I get to see Mitch skate around and get points, and have no cup because the cap makes us give players away?

Am I doing this right?

I am pretty sure Leaf fans want to see him get paid fair, and are not asking him to take 100,000 a year lol
