Prove it. He is in a bad situation because he can’t get ahead of Kreider and Panarin on the depth chart so he has to play with donkeys.

He did start the season on the Rangers top line so he kinda was given a chance. After a few games Gallant had seen enough and seemingly determined he wasn't ready for that role. To just assume he'd be doing what the other top young guys are doing with a little more playing time is disingenuous.

Laf is only 20 years old, give him some time to adjust to the pros and he will be solid in another year or two.

His skating is really really bad imo. I think he strength will come with maturity but his skating needs a makeover, I do not see how he can be successful in the NHL with his current level of skating, he needs to hire a skating coach and make this a priority asap.

Playing in the Q he was able to get away with it but obviously not at this level.

I don’t think it is disingenuous at all. Lafreniere had a very good stretch when Panarin was out and he had a competent NHL center in Strome. Lafreniere’s issue is that he is left wing only and he isn’t getting in front of Kreider or Panarin on the depth chart so he is playing with guys like Chytil and Gauthier who are too busy trying to find their own games. Lafreniere got a shot on the top line, briefly because they tried him at RW. Gallant decided (probably correctly) he liked Lafreniere better at LW and that was that. If you want to take the stand that a 20 year playing his off position should have been doing better, you are allowed to have that opinion, but I’m not going to agree with that either. Again, Lafreniere has not been put into a position to succeed.

I could see New Jersey sneaking in and sniping this one - they also have the assets.
It would be poetic since they wound up with the first pick traded for Miller to Tampa (which they received for Coleman), with which they drafted Shakir Mukhamadullin.

Mukhamadullin, Zacha, 1st for Miller :)
(think another team can beat this offer though)

That 1st would be really, valuable, currently top 10 right now and might be top 5 by seasons end. Dont think NJ is interested in moving that. Maybe in the off-season for next years first and if they can come to an extension with Miller in contingency as part of the trade.

Jack Hughes would absolutely explode playing with Miller. Miller drives play and can create space for Hughes. That would be a fantastic thunder and lightning combo on a line.

Laf's value is hard to guage at this point.

He is a recent 1OA and highly touted one at that.

His play from last year and this year isn't just underwhelming but putrid.

I've never seen a 1OA look so mediocre. Even the busts had some production in the beginning.

He could still figure it out and develop into a very good player but I don't think he'll ever be a star player.

I think Rangers have to hold on to him unless someone goes crazy and offers them a trade they can't refuse.

Laf is behind Panarin and Kreider for at least next 4 years unless if they drop off a cliff. Laf sucks on his off wing.

Othmann is dominating juniors and theres a high chance he succeeds in Hartford next year and gets called up.

What if Othmann pushes Laf down to #4 winger?

His production as a first overall pick is the lowest in how many years? Even Yak produced at a 60 pt pace his first year.

He could turn it around, but will he get the chance in New York behind all of the depth?

Laff will be worth pennies on the dollar if he doesn't find another gear next year. Rangers have a chance to win now and the return for Laff now could give them an edge.

I just can't see how the rangers would want to go give up assets for a guy they traded as a throw in.
That trade was 4 years ago, I think it is safe to say Miller has developed a bit. Also, JT Miller was in no way a throw in.

Rangers got:
Nemestikov, who was having an excellent season, and looked to be breaking out.
Recent 1st in Brett Howden
Recent 2nd in Hajek
1st round pick
2nd round pick

Do you really think all 5 assets were for McDonaugh?

If I’m the Rags, I hold on to the kid and hope he turns out.

If I’m the Canucks, I stay the hell away from this kid because he will cost a fortune, and is looking like a pretty solid bust right now.

Superstars don’t score 20 points a season.
Yes he will mature and get better, but for real…… year 2 and on pace for 19-20 points is pathetic for a 1 overall.
And Rags fans, don’t even act like you aren’t super disappointed in the kid so far.

Pure heart and soul? What does that even mean?
He was the heartbeat of this team through some of the worst years in our team history, and earned his spot by outplaying his given role of 4th line centre. The dude was expected to be given the captaincy 3 years before he got it, and he nearly beat the St. Louis Blues in the bubble in a way we haven’t seen since Kesler against Nashville in ‘11.

The thing is, that as a 1st overall, he should be elite enough to play off wing. But if what you say is true, he really should be traded witha + for Miller now, before he is worthless.

With Miller gone, the Canucks can have room for him in the top 6 playing with Petey and maybe Garland. His career will thank NYR for trading him.

Laf +Lundqvist(doubt we can get Schneider and Laff) + cond 1st. If you make ECF we get a cond 3rd as well, that 3rd becomes a 2nd if the cup is won.

Heart and soul...pure heart...heartbeat. All meaningless buzzwords. So he was the captain during some of the worst years in franchise history and got the captaincy because there wasn't anyone else to give it to? Hmm ok lol. Giving him the C seems like another poor Benning decision tbh and I suspect he'll be a very bland and easily forgotten captain when all is said and done.

He had a good playoffs, sure, but I wouldn't compare his performance to Kesler against Nashville. Nor does one good playoffs mean that we must keep him or that he's some sort of untouchable player.

rrright, I guess the million actual pro athletes and coaches and legendary players over the years who talk about the value of things like this were just simpletons who don't understand sports like you do

Massive projection here which isn't really worth a response, but I was referring to Horvat specifically and not "intangibles" in general. That being said, yeah these things are completely overrated.
