The important elements at play here are:

  • Shanahan initially deciding Dubas "did enough" to be extended.
  • Dubas' family dramatics definitely come off as a power play due to circling back with a rumoured ransom demand after being offered to stay. I believe it's true to some extent, but he used that as an excuse/leverage to shelter himself from a potentially unfavourable outcome (i.e. i'm stepping away, not fired).
  • Shanahan was not ready for this outcome and is scrambling. Seemed like a rambling mess fumbling with his water bottle while narrating some very odd timeline of events. This is not his preferred outcome.

I think there's two possibilities at play. Either Shanahan became aware of a more suitable replacement that came out of left field (a la Lou Lam situation), or this was a rushed decision that fell apart due to contract demands despite wanting the person back, and not a calculated decision, which does not inspire confidence. Have a feeling it's the latter.
Totally agree, think it's definitely the latter. He seemed like a nervous mess, like Dubas did, and he doesn't have a clue how to right the Titanic and the icebergs are about to make contact.

Tbh I'm kind of hoping for 1 of those Hurricanes AGM and then if they came I'd assume possibly Ryan Warsofsky could be their #1 target to coach the team since he coached Carolinas AHL team and won a Calder Cup.

If his wife would do that she ain't the one.

But then again, if that were true it would make sense that he'd pick his wife like he picks his players
for all we know his family could have been receiving death threats. The Toronto market is like a circus with all the media hysteria. I don’t blame him for going to a team like Pittsburgh - if in fact that’s where he winds up.

For this to be about Kyle asking for money, and Shanahan moving on instead of saying no is asinine on Shanahans part.

All the work they've done the past 5 years over some money. Everyone looking dumb here.
I think this it's about trust.. Shanahan thought a deal was generally in place. Dubas told him he wanted the job before the season started, then at the deadline. Shanahan went to get approval for a new contract with that information. Shanahan thought he and the agent for Dubas had a contract in place. Then Dubas dragged his feet at the eleventh hour, went to the media, aired his dirty laundry, and became wish washy. Shanahan's perspective on Dubas changed, rightfully so, and he decided it's not the type of business he wanted to be in.

Shanahan knows this doesn't look good on him, and I think that's why he probably pulled the plug on Dubas. Dubas seemingly told him repeatedly he wanted the job, they put a contract in place, and then Dubas changed his demand once it was obvious Shanahan was backed up against a wall and in a vulnerable position. One that he had a part in constructing. IMO if I'm Shanahan I'm hurt by it, considering he stuck his neck out hiring him to be an assistant GM and hiring him to be GM

Clown behavior from Dubas, great decision from Shanny.

With that being said I think Dubas is a good GM and will succeed wherever he goes, but you just cannot pull that shit and then be brought back.

Does it occur to anyone that Dubas' contract demand (almost like blackmailing given the immediate tasks on hand) is eerily similar to the way our stars demanded contracts like no one else in the business?

Not giving in to Dubas here is perhaps a symbolic gesture of putting a stop to another crazy round of agent-manipulated negotiations for presumably hotshot young stars (who have not delivered, or now, have failed to deliver when it matters most).

So when a new GM comes in, hires a new coach and they’re both in agreement they want to keep the Core 4 together and put in players around them they feel would work, how we feeling about that? This could be a possibility with new people in place.
I wouldn't fault the new regime for wanting to observe the team with their own eyes before making any bold moves - provided that we don't lose leverage in terms of our ability to acquire assets in exchange for any of our core players that are not part of the plan moving forward.

Ok, sure. And? What does that tangibly accomplish? Is the perception of the board of directors winning hockey games? Did we get extra points in the standings because they ran a public opinion poll and MLSE is perceived as based and redpilled? The Leafs didn't look like cucks yesterday and they still f***ing lost. Are we still talking about hockey here? Because if this wasn't a hockey decision just what the f*** are we doing here boys

They didn't want to extend a GM that appeared luke warm at the presser. He wasn't really successful as a GM here in the way of playoff results regardless. The obvious hockey decision here was to move on from Kyle.

Says the single person with no kids.

maybe his wife threatened divorce if he accepted the new contract. Who knows?

I strongly suspect that Dubas has other offers on the table in smaller media markets.
Single with no kids. Far from it. I've had more pressure/toll in life that he's had in his job paying him $2+m.

Wife threating to divorce you if you accepted a $4m/year job. Now that's pressure. Perhaps he should kick her to the curb. Truth is he wanted more money.

He'll look real creditable if he takes one of those offers after saying it was the Leafs or nothing.

how many more years does shanny have? Does Shanny line that up with his deal? I wonder if the incoming GM will have questions about Shanny's future. That will for sure be in play

Due to their contracts, when a New GM and coach comes in with NO major change, they better get AM and Willie tied up instead of letting walk to UFA.
MM is tricky.

Thats why I think a new GM coming in will signal core trades, might be even two of them are gone by July 1.

Matt Murray alone is a fireable offence. Leafs will need a first (probably Boston first that cost Sandin) just to get rid of him.

Sorry a lot of people wanted Masai fired for that because he's turning them into a treadmill team. Back to Kyle though, he has massive media worshipers for some odd reason.
Simple. They work for the same owners.
