Have you ever negotiated any kind of financial agreement, lying is usually the last thing you want to do, this isn't getting a job as a SCotUS and lying to a bunch of elected moronic egos.
I have been on both sides. One party asks for money, you say can say no or you can bump your offer.

The important elements at play here are:

  • Shanahan initially deciding Dubas "did enough" to be extended.
  • Dubas' family dramatics definitely come off as a power play due to circling back with a rumoured ransom demand after being offered to stay. I believe it's true to some extent, but he used that as an excuse/leverage to shelter himself from a potentially unfavourable outcome (i.e. i'm stepping away, not fired).
  • Shanahan was not ready for this outcome and is scrambling. Seemed like a rambling mess fumbling with his water bottle while narrating some very odd timeline of events. This is not his preferred outcome.

I think there's two possibilities at play. Either Shanahan became aware of a more suitable replacement that came out of left field (a la Lou Lam situation), or this was a rushed decision that fell apart due to contract demands despite wanting the person back, and not a calculated decision, which does not inspire confidence. Have a feeling it's the latter.

It is Friday and Long weekend, my colleagues and I had a nice brunch. We are talking about the business sides of sports bc one of them got a client who is planning to buy a WHL team due to profits....Got me thinking, wouldn't it be a bomb if MLSE decoupled with the Leafs and sell the Leafs to Houston or some other place for like 1.5billions and then MLSE pays the NHL 650mil to have a Franchise in Toronto. The new Leafs will play where the Leafs play now, and will go through expansion draft and might actually have a better team that could go further in the playoffs with none of those since 67, or 6 yrs of 1st round loss....

Says the single person with no kids.

maybe his wife threatened divorce if he accepted the new contract. Who knows?

I strongly suspect that Dubas has other offers on the table in smaller media markets.
If his wife would do that she ain't the one.

But then again, if that were true it would make sense that he'd pick his wife like he picks his players

I think it’s the latter. Him going on about how a big change may not come until the draft, the trade deadline, or next offseason tells me he doesn’t have anyone in mind, when he does find someone they’re going to take 6+ months to assess things, and he doesn’t trust Pridham to make the big calls in the meantime.

For everything Shanny did for Dubas, Dubas pulling this stunt is telling. Like I said, a wolf is sheeps's clothing.

It is, Dubas didn't have to negotiate through the press and then turnaround and ask for more money. Shanny made the prudent decision to let Dubas go because how could he keep a GM around who might not be committed to the Leafs 100% and made that known to everyone? Dubas left Shanny no choice except to drop him because every failure going forward would come back to "why would you hire a GM who might not have been 100% committed to building a champion?" This is professional sports of the highest magnitude, not running a rec league.

That family thing did not sit well with me at at all and no organization worth it's salt would accommodate such nonsense. The Leafs would've looked like cucks had they bowed to Dubas' demands.

Ok, sure. And? What does that tangibly accomplish? Is the perception of the board of directors winning hockey games? Did we get extra points in the standings because they ran a public opinion poll and MLSE is perceived as based and redpilled? The Leafs didn't look like cucks yesterday and they still f***ing lost. Are we still talking about hockey here? Because if this wasn't a hockey decision just what the f*** are we doing here boys

It is weird how Shanny and Dubas are communicating on Dubas extension through emails instead of phone calls or in person.

Agreed. When you are in a leadership position there should be no hesitation or hint of ambivalence.

The job is too critical not to have someone not fully committed to the role.

That whole speak to my family crap will not fly in any corporate organization; especially in these exec level positions.

Family is important but that discussion is done behind close doors not in font of media. Dubas has been in the job for 5 Years. He knows what this job entails.

I frankly don’t know what he was thinking. He is so unprofessional.

Just a coincidence that the two teams in the WCF are based in Dallas and Vegas and the two teams in the ECF have red jerseys I guess.

Dubas, with no leverage, somehow convinced himself that he held all the cards, made his greed move and Shanny erased him along the boards, leaving Dubas dazed in a quiet room. Yesterday Dubas thought he was going to be GM, imagine the stress his family is under today. I’ve never heard of anything like it.

I wanted him back, after hearing how this went down, I‘m so glad he’s gone. A self absorbed, arrogant twit, who lacks common sense, lost in his won hubris. I’m convinced now this is the best move for the organization, this guy is missing some important traits.

He had all the cards because he "passed all the tests"
