If he is their best player why they do not sign his first?

What if Kucherov was asking for +$8M per year, you still sign him first just because he's your best player ?

People seem to forget it sometimes takes time to find middle ground, that's called negotiation.

Maybe they should let guys like Kucherov elect for arbitration so these impasses don't happen so often, and we don't have young stars missing camp and maybe regular season games.

It was the only the arbitration hearing that finally got the Flyers and Schenn to compromise.

Man, Yzerman has been tested as a negotiator/ego manager in the last couple of years with Stamkos/Drouin and now Kucherov. Tampa fans must be clamoring for one of these guys to just go along with the plan

Hedman didn't seem to put up much of a fight. A player like that could easily command over 10 mil. I think at this point Tampa fans probably trust Yzerman. His hardball tactics have worked every time.

true...he's sorta due for a "loss" but still should be able to fit NK into the fold even with just a couple small moves..

He already has a loss, Lindback and Callahan(contract, not initial trade) weren't what I would call "wins" or "draws"

I'd call Callahan a draw at the moment. He's had a good year and a bad year. Filppula will be a borderline "win" (for his first two years, when we really needed him) IF we can unload the contract before it costs us a player. If we have to keep him and he costs us a core player, it's a loss.

Lindback got us Drouin. ;)

No they shouldn't.

Sure Yzerman is going to give up 3 years of control of Kucherov for 1 year of Shattenkirk not happening. Pretty sure you're being sarcastic here but no way does Shattenkirk get you Kucherov.

I was being sarcastic. In no way should they trade him.

I would love to get either him or Tyler Johnson from Tampa, but I doubt i'd be comfortable with the asking price (rightfully so as both those guys are awesome)

Pacioretty for Kucherov, but MTL would need some assurance that he's sign and not bolt to the KHL, who are reportedly offering $6-7 M tax-free.
MTL would also have to clear some cap space.

Already been discussed in multiple threads. Not only is Kucherov more valuable but the last thing the Lightning need is another LW. There's no deal to be made here.

Tampa's salary will be tax free too, and also in the six million dollar territory. It also won't be that ridiculous rubles currency, so...

Even if he said he never wanted to play for TB again, I wouldn't trade him for Pacioretty.

It's called negotiating. Why sign someone 8M+ if you can get him down to 7-7.5M? May not seem like much cap to hold out on, but that extra money could be used for other players/signings/etc.

They may be stuck on term too, who knows.

ummm, no, Tampa's salary will NOT be tax free. Not only would he have to pay federal taxes, but state and local taxes in the other states/cities that he plays hockey games in.

Only problem is they signed stamkos for 8.5 first when kucherov has been their best forward. Might of made sence to try and sign kuch first at 7.5 and then sign stamkos

Unless they do the salary in all bonuses like they did stamkos. Then it is almost all state income tax free.

Then they'd be over the cap and be forced to make a trade from a position of real weakness.
