I can respect yzerman for the job hes done and for getting players to buy in to the plan and take less like detroit players used to do but this is the third guy that hes had to deal with who either wanted out or its come down to the wire in regards to new contracts. how many times can this happen before he actually gets burned and the player does leave. It just seems like too much risk. Kucherov should have been the first player he locked up in the off season not stamkos.

A contender or bubble team with cap space and do some damage this year if they choose to break the unwritten rule and give these hold outs an offer sheet. Huge names are still unsigned, 3 top pairing D and 2 of the better wingers in the game.

Thats the big problem.

You dont want to keep betting against the house, and in this case its Mother Russia. You know the KHL will throw stupid money at him, I dont know if I want to play chicken with Kucherov here. Tampa needs Kucherov more than Kucherov needs Tampa

He doesn't have a contract, so it is obvious that he wouldn't be attending training camp.

One doesn't have to mean the other. Gionta went to NJ's camp without a contract (he bought his own insurance). I can't remember if he signed his contract during camp or after camp.

I hope he signs before the season starts... I'm going to be in TB and will be catching the DET/FLA games... it'll be disappointing if he's not there for those games.

thats what i was saying in my previous post. In reality yzerman should have locked up kucherov first and then dealt with stamkos. if kucherov walks before yzerman can move a contract then hes gonna regret it for a long time.

Really kind of headscratching he let Kucherov go this long.

This is order of the moves Izodman made this offseason:

Extended Paquette
Extended JT Brown
Extended Stamkos
Extended Hedman
Extended Vasilevsky
Extended Gudlevskis
Extended Killorn
Extended Namestikov

-Kucherov TBD

Wow i would love Kuch on the Canucks but i fear Benning in trades

I don't know what the Canucks could give up that would be too much for Kucherov. Pretty sure Juolevi and Virtanen wouldn't be enough. Maybe if he added Tanev to that, but I'm still unsure. Kucherov has been a top 20 forward in the league the passed two seasons

What does Yzerman do to manage all of the stress? Its been 1 big contract situation after another..

I guess no different than Bowman in Chicago.. besides Chicago mostly dealing with bottom 6 contracts every year.

The last two being the biggest head scratchers.

It's not exactly like Yzerman can just say "Ok sign here" and it's done lol. There are a TON of moving parts in signing Kucherov. Kuch will be signed and then the discussion will be "OMG HOW CAN THEY SIGN X".

Truth is, they can't. Even with Bishop and Boyle off the books at seasons end (7M), I fully expect at least 2 (probably 3) of Drouin, Johnson, Flip, Garrison, Callahan and Killorn to be gone.

The team that takes the ice during the regular season next year will be pretty radically different from the one that does so this year, IMO.

You sign Kucherov long term this year. Let Bishop and Boyle walk. Trade Johnson at the draft/during the offseason. Pray someone picks up Killorn in the expansion draft/BO Flip on his last year. Trade Garrison (I don't believe Garrison will really need a "sweetener") and let Koekkoek take his spot.

The below would just be without those guys, not including anything that they may get back in a deal. Gusev could be a darkhorse too, if TB can work some magic on him. Not pretty, but I think something like this is relatively realistic. Don't see them being able to move Callahan.

Palat-Stamkos-Callahan
Drouin-Namestnikov-Kucherov
Paquette/Gusev-Brayden Point-JT Brown
Adam Erne/Paquette-Brett Howden/Matthew Peca-Joel Vermin

Hedman-Stralman
Koekkoek-Sustr
Coburn-Nesterov

Vasilevski
Wilcox/Gudlevskis

Has the window closed where you can be a certain percentage over the cap without penalties, like during the middle of summer? Or is it game #1?

Well there was sort of a timer on Stamkos

sure there was a timer on stamkos but i say screw the timer and let stamkos walk. who would you rather given that money to? a 23 year old whos been one of your driving forces the last couple years both in the regular season and playoffs or a guy coming off blood clots.

Well, seeing as it's Yzerman's fault why he has so many issues...

It's almost as if he's the toughest one to sign due to what he wants differing from what the Lightning want. I understand that they should pay the guy but it's not a clean cut process all the time.

Yeah but the only ones that really matters to the Kucherov negotiation is Stamkos and Killorn. It's easier to come to terms with guys like Nesterov, Paquette, and Brown when they aren't making much. If they need the space that any of those three may provide, they're easy to move. Hedman and Vasilevskiy's don't matter because their new deals don't start until next season.

Problem is that Izerman signed a slew of other guys eating up cap space to the point where now he has cornered himself into not being able to offer Kucherov a fair value contract long term. He needs to either pray he caves or make a panic trade to clear space so that Kucherov doesnt bolt for the KHL.

Had he worked out a deal to pay Kucherov a little more than he would have liked, before all the Vasilevsky, Nesterov, Killorn, etc deals went out. THEN you penny pinch the bottom line guys and find replacements for them at bargain prices elsewhere if they dont budge.

You aint finding a replacement for Kucherov now that Yzerman is at the end of the food line
