CANTLON: WOLF PACK HEAD COACHING POSITION REMAINS OPEN

The Rangers need to get out of Hartford. The last thing they needed was to hire a former Whaler player.

It is a little concerning the Rangers have been turned down by two candidates.

That’s not a good grade for Gorton/Drury/Davidson. Who knows what the reason is for it, but it seems to be close at hand to assume that coaches don’t buy into their plans. And seeing the state of our AHL team the last years, that is maybe not that surprising.

Even if Quinn get good grades for his first season here, it should be very attractive for an AHL coach to head the farm team of a NHL team with such an inexperienced NHL coach. Could definitely be an opening at the NHL level within the not so distant future and an interim position can definitely become a full term job, look at Chicago.

I wouldn’t put all this on Gorton though, we had to start our search extremely late since Davidson’s signing dragged out so long. It’s just very late in the year to be looking for a head coach. You are looking for a guy to do a job that should have started in April/May. Not just planning next season, but input on roster decisions etc.

Front Office has been informing candidates on the short list that they did not get the job. I'm led to believe that at this point they have their guy.

Also, Dineen (the former Hartford player) was never offered the job. Just interviewed. He moved on when the Rangers did not extend an offer.

Now, the Rangers have flat out told candidates that they are not going to get an offer for the job. Much more defined.

Whats the hold up on an announcement? Contract details?

any names on who besides dineen were interviewed but didn't make the short list?

Gorton and JD have had different ideas, JD has liked some guys but Gorton hasn’t been on board when push came to shove; it has made things a bit less streamlined than one would hope.

But the impression is that Gorton has his guy pegged because of formal dismissals going out.

Conflict is not necessarily a bad thing if it's amicable and you reach resolution in the end.

Id love for Adam Oates to be there but unlikely. He's the perfect coach to help with players skillsets imo

Doubt it, it seems like of the two guys turning us down one is the guys that went to Pittsburgh’s farm team, and that means that they are basically just looking for a merited AHL guy. Which probably is good.

Really? He's been unemployed since May. You don't think that if we wanted him, and he wanted us, we'd have made it happen in the intervening two months? I believe we're the only AHL opening at the moment, so it's not like there's high demand for AHL-level coaches, or many options for AHL-level coaches to consider.

Based on where we're at in the off-season and the few reports we've read, I would bet we're looking at someone that's not really "on the radar" at the moment.

You don’t want Adam Oates

no evidence I've seen that Oates is a decent team head coach
but he's been seemingly effective, if not always appreciated by the teams, as a player skills coach
there could be a role as consultant or roving instructor
he may not accept being restricted to one team's players, but, like Prentiss, he could be a resource the team leverages with its prospects
