Kopitar; For or Against a trade if it comes to it?

So we'll just ignore the gaping hole on the second pairing? As far as I'm concerned that money should be used to address the defense and not keep Kopitar. I just don't like the way he said it. All that money should be earmarked for the defense.

That money can be used for this season on defense. Although probably not before they know exactly what's up with Richards. Just in case they have to somehow keep his full salary this year.

No, we're going to roll with Ehrhoff and McNabb. Don't worry give Kopi whatever he wants, cause he's a great guy.

McNabb did fine last year and I think if given additional responsiblities and ice time, he'll adjust. Most defensemen take a good 300 games before they are fully acclimated. ,

McNabb or not, that doesn't change the head count or DL's situation.
Last I checked McNabb was in the pressbox at the end of the season so I would guess that he needs to first improve to become a regular bottom pairing defensman...
I expect a QO extension. Thats it.

So what big FA 2nd pairing D is still languishing out there waiting for the Kings to give him an offer he can't refuse?

I've said make a trade numerous times. I'd take money away from other areas before giving Kopitar anything from Voynov's opening. But then again, I wouldn't match Toews' contract.

McNabb played in the final game of the season. He scored a goal and was a +2

He also played in the second to the last game of the season

He was scratched on 3/30 against Chicago though

Trade who for who? The Kings would have to give to receive. The defense did pretty good last year all things considering without Voynov all season, so maybe the team feels comfortable with what they have for now.

I haven't even bothered focusing on who would be a good fit. Something's gotta give though. This defense isn't winning a Cup.

Chicago survived with Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson and Oduya playing a bulk of the minutes with a throw away pairing of Timonen and van Riemsdyk on the third pairing.

While Muzzin is no Seabrook, I think a top four of Doughty, Muzzin, Ehrhoff and either Martinez or McNabb could be patched up favorably, especially when you look at the Kings' bottom pairing in comparison to Chicago's sparsely used third unit.

Boy, I hit a nerve with some of you when talking about long-term financial allocation.

I wasn't saying Kopitar would get all $4M+ of that, just maybe that the relief would allow them to bridge the gap between what he wants and what Dean wants, a few hundred thousand in terms of AAV or $2-4M in terms of total dollars.

Hit a nerve, lol. We're simply having a discussion about some different scenarios.

I personally would use that money on a defenseman of some sorts (a trade being the most likely scenario), but I wouldn't be shocked if they take a million or two and give it to Kopitar's contract. Either way his contract will hurt and be extremely lucrative.

They didn't win with defense in 2014 either. There were people that wanted Mitchell and Voynov gone during the run. They won with 4 guys at or near a PPG, playoff Doughty, depth guys scoring, and a couple timely saves from Quick.

2013, they made it to the 3rd round with an old Scuderi, Voynov probably the best defenseman, less than playoff Doughty, Regehr, Muzzin the train wreck rookie, no Mitchell, and Greene, Martinez, and Ellerby in and out of the lineup. Of course Quick was great.

Isn't, can't, won't, I think these are words that are still difficult to apply to this Kings team. Even last year. They won't not make the playoffs.

The Kings need Doughty at the Norris level. Muzzin will have to have an expanded role, like a little more time on the PK. Same with McNabb, and he's going to be a key to the defense. If he develops and gets more consistent, that's one less thing to worry about.

Plenty of time to figure things out too. Voynov off the cap, assuming no extra cap space taken up by Richards, and Lombardi has room to work with. Everything doesn't have to be perfect in Game 1.

The Cap is going to force the Kings to put younger, cheaper bodies in the lineup.

Forbort/Gravel please.

I expect Dean to pick someone up at the deadline. Then 90% of the members on this board will moan, complain, and cling to the notion that the Kings will be decent 7 years from now and how he totally ruined it. Newsflash - the Kings will be absolute garbage 7 years from now and I have zero problem with that. If you're gonna go all in, go all in. Don't *****foot. I hope the Kings are unwatchable. If the Kings aren't #1 they better be #30. Being a mid-pack team is the real tragedy. The last thing I want to be is the Canucks, Red Wings, Sharks, or Capitals.
