Friedman: Gibson is interested in Carolina, or Edmonton

Wasn't Friedman the one also claiming that Gibson swore he'd never play another game for Anaheim? How'd that turn out?

Edit: Much like dogs & fire hydrants, 'journalists' & clickbait seem to go together...
No that was Seravalli.

This all makes sense. I see why Gibson would want a chance at a cup, I see why Carolina and Edmonton would be interested.

I don't see the upside for the Ducks if they have to retain, and take back cap, and make their team worse at the same time. Neither of those teams are going to make a hockey trade, so it's futures. And if the return is futures then it needs to be big enough to get past the fact that this will make the Ducks worse at a time when they are trying to get better.

Gibson for Kotchetkov? I'm not sure where he fits in either of those teams.
The Ducks have Dostal. If a goalie is the main piece coming back why not just keep Gibson?

Ah, that's right. Thanks

I can certainly see him wanting a chance at The Cup. And after all the crap/horrid years he went through with the Ducks, 'if' he does want to go they should make it happen ... if (kind of like Burke & Bryz).

But I agree, at this point, there's very little upside to trading him from the Ducks POV & certainly not for the return people here on HF seem to think they'll trade him for (a mid round pick or two)

The team is on the verge of getting good (at least with a better coach), why break up one of the best goalie duos in the league (again, presuming Gibson isn't demanding a trade)? Dostal's going to need (& has earned) a good contract. But even with paying him well, adding in Gibson's remaining years isn't prohibitively expensive, especially with the cap going up. Keep them together & see where things go with the various young players figuring things out.

Are the Canes interested in Gibson? Or the sugar that would come with him?
I can see Carolina looking at Gibson again in the off-season if he's still with Anaheim. Even if they sign Rantanen they have a ton of cap space this off-season (33.75M in expiring UFA contracts.) So they can more easily absorb Gibson's full price for 2 seasons between those contracts coming off the books and the cap going up.

But Gibson would have to deal with a tandem situation here as well; Carolina's not moving Kochetkov to get Gibson and they will want to continue to play Kochetkov regularly.

Who did Friedman hear this from? Gibson? Anonymous source? Deep state actor? He doesn't say...

Weren't you also crapping on a similar report from LeBrun just yesterday in another thread? Maybe Gibson wants out, I don't get what would be so hard to understand about that.

I wouldn't say I was "crapping" on it...I was simply pointing out that it was from November before Gibson had even played a handful of games. I also pointed out that there was no solid reporting...just LeBrun speculating. The same seems true of Friedman. No source...no credibility.

When have they ever revealed a source? You have two of the most inside, insiders stating that Gibson is in play. Why be so obtuse in your objections?

Gibson for Andersen.

Andersen back to Anaheim to help Dostal for ROS.

Gibson to Canes in a 1b scenario until Koch ready to take over.

Don't expect value for either goalie in the trade given their injuries/cap hit.

Where does either article state that he is in play? That is Verbeek's decision to make and I see no quotes from Verbeek in that regard. The only comments ever attributed to Verbeek are that the price for Gibson remains "very high". Is Edmonton or Carolina willing to pay a "very high" price for him? If so, bring the proposals on...but make them consistent with a "very high" price tag.

This is a case of which gamble makes more sense: hoping Gibson regains his form in Carolina when motivated by playoffs, or hoping Andersen stays healthy into and through the playoffs?

Because when he's been healthy, Andersen has been better than Gibson the past 2 years. That's why I think Carolina is more likely to revisit in the off-season when Andersen is a UFA at 34 and the UFA market is quickly dwindling.

Or, we just keep the guy who has been one of the best goalies in the league this year that is still under contract for 3 more years.

Stuart Skinner, Beau Akey or Shane LaChance, STL 2nd '2025 for Gibson at 50% retained.

Or, we just keep the guy who has been one of the best goalies in the league this year that is still under contract for 3 more years.

He possibly doesn't want that. So then what?

Thought it was about getting out his contract now that he has become tradeable...he wasn't the last 2 years.

I’m really curious to see what happens to Thatcher Demko in Vancouver.

He keeps getting injured and I wonder what the Canucks appetite is to keep betting on his health. They can’t count on an Arturs Silovs Cinderella run again.

Demko is also from SoCal and this is as close as he would get to playing from home.

If not this TDL, maybe next off-season, I could see Vancouver and Anaheim doing a Demko-for-Gibson swap.

Never really was about that IMO. Ducks have so much cap space available that his contract cost is irrelevant. Again, for whatever reason, Verbeek has stuck by Gibson and has been demanding a very high return for him. This year that return seems 100% justified.
