I doubt the NMC is a hill Lombardi is willing to die on. Yes he isn't handing them out easily but I don't think it's a problem if you've earned it and being the leading scorer on the team for what, eight years, if that isn't earning it I don't know what is. Might not be a full NMC over the entire contract but it's gonna be there in some form, you can count on that. Lombardi even said they don't work anyway so why would he be opposed to include it? I mean I understand why it's better to not have one from the Kings point of view but if a core player like Kopitar insists then you gotta compromise.

I'd guess this is strictly about the cap hit and how Lombardi sees his boxes being filled and at what number. The NMC may be a way to lower the cap hit but I doubt it's gonna get in the way of the contract being signed in the end.

Like Brown... if the cap hit is high enough you don't need an NTC.

Thought I'd drop this gem here for those considering moving Kopitar.

The Kings are looking hard to add a quality Defenseman as well as some depth up front. Sutter loves the Staals and I have heard a few scenarios involving Eric and Jordan tied to LA, but I get the impression we are talking a "plan b" if sorts if Kopitar proves "unsignable."

Nah, was thinking about it earlier and the Gretzky remark reminded me of it.

I'd like a 7 year deal at 9.5 per (66.5 total). I think that's beneficial for both parties and a win/win (as it should be). 6 years versus 8 and 8.5 versus 10.5 equalled out.

I can get behind this. make sense for everyone

food for thought:

the salary cap in 2009 was 56.7 million, Kopi's contract accounted for 11.99 % of the King's cap at the time (6.8AAV)

the salary cap for this season is going to be 71.4 million.
11.99% of that is 8.56 AAV...rounding that up, and giving him a 1% raise (13% even) would equate to 9.28 AAV

Toews' contract at 10.5 AAV (comparable) accounts for 14.7% of Chi's cap space

like I said, just some food for thought. I dont see how in any world Kopitar would take less than 9-9.5M AAV.

Why would the Kings round it up? That $8.5M is a pretty fair deal, maybe for six years.

It's been pretty quite after Dean's "not in the same ballpark" comment, which is probably a good thing.

I just vurped. Thanks Ziggy.

I went to a ton of the ice dogs games and watched both Vopats play, how we got suckered into that deal was simply amazing. Horrible GMing.

I remember McMaster throwing around the word "gem" to describe Roman Vopat. And what a gem he was...
