Kopitar embodies everything I love about hockey players and anything short of him retiring a King would make me question if I want to live in this world anymore.

The problem with giving Kopi an nmc is that then DL would have to give one Doughty, Toffoli, Pearson, Lucic etc.

Kopi has earned the right as has Doughty when he is due. Depending on how, TT and Pearson go, then maybe, Lucic nah, unless its a 2 or 3 year deal.

I'd be fully willing to do something like 5-6 year NMC/2-3 year limited NTC.

Lombardi does this, Kopi, doesn't.

At which player do you draw the line??? Having the players dictate the roster, and not the GM, could be disastrous.

Losing Kopitar because you wont offer a NMC wouldn't be? Who knows if that is the hold up, if it is important to kopitar or not. However this team is ****ed if we lose our 1c.

Kopitar is one of the main core players, so i'd give him a NMC if it was the difference between him signing or not.

You're talking to the wrong person, because I don't. Sure, we're a better team with Kopi, no doubt. However, I don't think being without Kopi will be as harsh as some may think. Hey, if the Oilers traded the best player to ever don on a hockey jersey and still won the cup a year or two later, I don't see why the kings couldn't. Yep, the greatest 1C ever got traded, and Messier who was always just a 2C led the Oilers to the cup. Shocking!!!!!

And yes, I do believe that it's the NMC that is the holdup. But let's stop and analyze this for a bit. So, if Kopi's asking for an NMC, why is he asking for it on this contract, but was fine without one previously? Is it because he may be asking for too much and is afraid of being traded??? Maybe he shouldn't ask for so much then. Problem solved.

Perhaps because he is after certainty. He's late 20's with a house and family, maybe he doesn't want to get moved all over the place now. Other teams would offer one. We don't have the depth, We don't even have a 3c locked in but we're happy enough losing our 1c? Seems daft to me.

If Kopi wants certainty, I'm sure Lombardi will gladly oblige. Just sign for below FMV, and shorter term, and Lombardi will gladly offer a NMC. It's a give and take. However, I think in this case, Kopi knows he has the upper hand, and he seems to want it all!!!

He has earned the right to have the upperhand though hasn't he. He could get certainty from another team, so why shouldn't he expect a similar contract with us?

We've won 2 cups following Lombardi's formula. One of which was to not offer any NMC's. I don't see why we would stray away from that winning formula, do you?

And no, I don't think any player has earned the right to have the upperhand. Maybe Gretzky back in his glory days. But Kopi ain't Gretzky, not even close.

Yes, Do you know DL wont give Kopi a NMC though? I never said Kopi was gretzky, you keep bringing him up, Kopi is the face of the Kings 200ft game, I know Andreoff is something special, but is he really going to match up with Getzlaf/ Kesler or Toews?

You do what it takes to keep your best players, Chicago paid Toews and Kane, and they won again, we should just pay Kopitar give him a NMC if its necesary.

Every so often you just have to down trou bend over and smile, in the interest of success.

Yes, and that is why I'd be open to overpaying Kopi on a max term.

Andreoff, special???

Nah, was thinking about it earlier and the Gretzky remark reminded me of it.

I'd like a 7 year deal at 9.5 per (66.5 total). I think that's beneficial for both parties and a win/win (as it should be). 6 years versus 8 and 8.5 versus 10.5 equalled out.

Well, I look at it this way. Who on the team that we might have to sign would warrant a NMC or a NTC? Doughty? That's about it. It's not like there are a bunch of guys coming up that would demand one.

The core guys are locked up throughout the window already. If DL has to give a NMC to Kopitar to keep the cap number down to supplement those guys, so be it. The only 2 UFAs of any consequence coming up are Kopitar and Lucic. Toffoli and Pearson are RFA, they certainly aren't going to warrant any clauses.

It's not like a NMC or NTC is going to bite the team in the ass in 5 years, the window is going to be closed. At best the team will be what Detroit is now.

Detroit is a nothing team right now. I'd rather be a bottom feeder. Being a perpetual fringe playoff team doesn't grow a franchise.

Yep. I think DL agrees, and I doubt he'll hang around for a big retool or rebuild anyways. Even if Kopitar gets a NMC, he would probably waive. Who wants to hang around for a major retool when you only have a couple years left?

I'm usually against clauses like this, but this is a case where the benefits far outweigh any negatives down the line.
