Depends on the payday. If Kopitar was willing to sign an 8-year, cap friendly deal, it would have already been done.
Remember Dean's words, not mine, "We aren't even in the same ballpark."
So given that statement by Dean, I have to assume that Kopitar is seeking an 8-year deal with an AAV in excess of $9M. If that's what he wants, then hell yes Dean has every right to make him earn it.
Kopitar did not play last season like a player that is worth that kind of money. What makes you think that mentality has anything to do with it (even though I think it does, because he is far too passive in the offensive zone).
