]and so you think the right thing to do is squabble over his payday to wait until he earns it again, instead of justly giving him his due and believing that he'll personally hold himself to playing at the standards expected by a big contract?[/B] Yeah, that mentality bit us in the ass with Richards before, but Kopitar ain't Richards, and I don't believe that he fades out or loses his "will" to perform at those levels.

Depends on the payday. If Kopitar was willing to sign an 8-year, cap friendly deal, it would have already been done.

Remember Dean's words, not mine, "We aren't even in the same ballpark."

So given that statement by Dean, I have to assume that Kopitar is seeking an 8-year deal with an AAV in excess of $9M. If that's what he wants, then hell yes Dean has every right to make him earn it.

Kopitar did not play last season like a player that is worth that kind of money. What makes you think that mentality has anything to do with it (even though I think it does, because he is far too passive in the offensive zone).

And what exactly does "not in the same ballpark mean?" I suspect it was he was asking Towes money and Dean was offering Getzlaf money. Which is $2M apart which is a lot but as the same time it isn't.
In the end I think it was hyperbole.

I agree, I think Kopitar and his agent set the starting point at where Toews did, and Dean countered with a lower offer. I also think that Kopitar also asked for a full NMC - BECAUSE he wants to stay in LA, and Dean doesn't want to give that because that's how he operates.

All those things considered - yes, they aren't "in the same ballpark", but I don't think it's absolute worlds apart either.

edit: and FWIW, Kopitar has already earned this payday in my opinion.

I don't agree. Kopitar got his money on his second contract. He has already been compensated for what he has already done.

Hope Dean doesn't give him the NTC, and definitely not an NMC. It's nice if Kopitar wants to stay in LA, but the Kings may not want him at some point.

That's fair. Getzlaf 5/26.5 on his second deal, Toews 5/31.5, Kopitar got considerably more on his second deal.

whatever contract he gets will not only take into account his past contributions, but will largely be an expectation of he will contribute in the future. I have no doubts that a team like the Devils or Jets would offer him 7-8 years at 10M + AAV. If Dean really wants to play hardball, Kopi should test free agency

Well, they can only offer 7 years, but let'em. They won't win jack with Kopitar on that kind of deal, and neither would the Kings.

Kopitar got PAID on his 2nd contract. There was no hometown discount. Dean went out on a limb and paid for future performacne. Let's not pretend that Kopitar didn't get compensated very well for what he has already done.

You should be worried about Kopitar's contract if it prevents Dean from surrounding him with a supporting cast that can win championships, especially when Kopitar can no longer deliver at the box office as the leading man.

There is absolutely no reason based on the data and evidence in his own play to give him an 8-year deal worth $72M+. It's just bad business.

This again; what does PAID mean ? Was he overpaid or paid just right ?

BTW as expected most people DONT think 8/72 is overpayment but DONT let that stop the jihad.

Just passing through, nod, fist bump, later...

Paid means that he was fairly compensated. Read one of the other posts where the Getzlaf and Toews second contracts are mentioned. Yes, Kopitar had a better deal than each of those guys before he was a proven winner. So, Kopitar got PAID on his second deal.

Plenty of people know 8/72 is overpayment. They just don't want to admit it, don't see any other solution, or don't like seeing their favorite player criticized.

DERKA!!! DERKA!!!

BTW, Drew Doughty IS the Kings best player!!!

So why dont you write paid if he was fairly compensated ?
he he, so now its plenty not most; voting was done on the main board so favoritism has nothing to do with it and most people voted 8/72 was NOT an overpayment. Now I know that that little fact wont stop you but it was nice to see.

AHA:)

Yeah, I was ****ing around.

Pretty sure if you follow almost any advice I give on this forum outside of beer and BBQ your gonna end up looking stupid.

Do watch out for Polar bears though, those ******* are rough.

Because many people like yourself act as if the Kings owe something to Kopitar for what he has done in the past when they don't.

Kopitar was PAID on his last deal. He doesn't deserve something extra this time around for what he did in the past. That argument was probably valid for Dustin Brown and most people still hate his contract.

In case you haven't noticed most people that post on the main board about other teams are kind of stupid, or at best sheep.
