"Hmmm, that is fair point. Thank you for bringing it up, I'm coming around to your way of thinking, or at least accepting it to be a possibility on the outside chance I'm somewhat off, which can happen."

Money isn't important, but wait, yes it is.

If Kopitar has another season like his last one, there is a big chance he doesn't get 8 years with an AAV of $9M. Getzlaf and Perry both signed their last contracts in-season. It didn't seem to bother them.

Regarding what Kopitar did for the Kings over the last 10 years, he was highly compensated for what he did. His second contract was very good for him, and for the Kings. No way I would give him the NMC. It's a team policy that has worked extremely well for the Kings. No need to change it now.

I understand how you feel, you're a Kopitar fan, not a Kings fan.

I understand this is not a standard reply here, but still, it's not so uncommon. Afterwards my compatriot likid made a perfectly legitimate point, but I'm still adding my two cents.

Look guys, becoming a fan of LAK is not like entering a caste system with secret rules. Or is it?

Every person here can tell his own story about how he (or she) got hooked and how the primal passion was born. A lot of Slovenian fans will tell you a similar story as likid did: the first religion was Kopi, the next one was LAK. Is such a fan worth less?

Reinventing "you're biased" in such conversations and in such a way - just to make a "argument" - is below your own conversation standards. I've liked this fabulous LAK forum for many years before becoming a member, with plenty of wit, knowledgeable, humorous and multicultural discussions, following you guys on a daily bases. This experience was a big part of me becoming a LAK fan. And I'm staying a LAK fan even if Kopi leaves.

You make some great points. That bolded part is one of things that makes you a Kings fan IMO.

Also, my apologies to likid. It doesn't matter how or why you're a Kings fan. As long as your not a Ducks, Sharks, Canucks, ... fan it's all good.

Is it egos? Is that what the holdup is all about? IMHO, it's not a problem.....

Kopitar = multi-year deal averaging $7.95 million per season

Lucic = multi-year deal averaging $6.85 million per season

Ehrhoff = multi-year deal averaging $4 million per season

Not horribly problematic.

i'd rather pay kopitar 9.5M/8, let lucic walk, and give Ehrhoff 3M/2

I wouldn't give Ehrhoff that much, but I think you're on the right track with the other two guys.

And if that's what Kopitar wanted it'd be done.

True, but now that someone else has the same basic idea, I'm looking forward to all the responses saying that offer is an insult to Kopitar.

i actually wouldn't be super surprised to see Kopitar take a "hometown discount" contract (I'd call that anything under a 9M cap hit) if Dean budges on the NTC.

food for thought:

the salary cap in 2009 was 56.7 million, Kopi's contract accounted for 11.99 % of the King's cap at the time (6.8AAV)

the salary cap for this season is going to be 71.4 million.
11.99% of that is 8.56 AAV...rounding that up, and giving him a 1% raise (13% even) would equate to 9.28 AAV

Toews' contract at 10.5 AAV (comparable) accounts for 14.7% of Chi's cap space

like I said, just some food for thought. I dont see how in any world Kopitar would take less than 9-9.5M AAV.

We have the best goalie in hockey. We're paying him an average of $5.8 million per year.

Kopitar is NOT the best forward in hockey. And you want to give him substantially more than $8 million per year?

Quick is not the best goalie in hockey. and yes, I would give Kopitar more than 8 million a year, without a doubt

hell, I would give Kopitar 11M without a second thought, 1Cs don't just grow on trees. You can't put a price on something that you can't replace - it's that simple. The only saving grace here really is that Kopitar is bound to be more reasonable than that since he wants to stay.

Regardless of what fans want to think, players rarely, if ever, take the discounts that we think they will. I wouldn't if I was a player and neither would anyone else on here.

it's ok. heart is where heart belongs. just take a second or count to 10 before you pull such a trigger next time.

If you can't disagree civilly, don't post. Discuss posts not posters--there aren't concrete, correct answers here, so be prepared to back your opinion up with evidence and not be offended when someone questions it. I'd rather not threadban anyone but we're getting there.

Seabrook didn't care. He was going to get that money, whether it was more money in fewer years, or the same money spread out. Fully aware of the Hawks cap situation.

It's their job. They're paid to play hockey, not win championships. If the Cups come, that's great for them. When they're 57, money is worth more than memories.

That's just crazy talk. Heck, Getzlaf's cap hit is only 8.25M.

I'm fully against a NMC.

I'm not, if he sucks ass in 5 years so be it. It would be virtually impossible to replace our No1 c. It doesn't happen very often where a team accumulates such talent at the same time, Ie a top 1c a top 2c an elite dman and a top netminder along with a strong supporting cast. We've been spoilt for the last 5 years, lets not let it turn to **** because we wont give one of our most important players a NMC when every other team seems to hand them out to their 'keepers'

The problem with giving Kopi an nmc is that then DL would have to give one Doughty, Toffoli, Pearson, Lucic etc.
