Kopitar; For or Against a trade if it comes to it?

Completely within Kopitar's power to remain a Los Angeles King.

Its within any players power to remain anywhere they are offered a contract. There's only so much loyalty and home town discount that should be reasonably expected however.

...and there are only so much that should be expected from an organization in terms of a retirement contract. It goes both ways.

I don't advocate signing him "at all costs" - but I am advocating for signing him up to Toews money. I'd like to sign him for less, for sure, but I'm sanguine that he's a special talent with skills not easily replaced, that we're competing for him in a highly competitive market, and that we need his or comparable skills now - not years from now. All that means I'll pay a premium to keep him.

Special talent with skills not easily replaced.... Kopitar ????

We are talking about someone whose shots decline since 5 years and getting more invisible on the ice every year.
And 3rd liner numbers aren't supporting his case as well

I am sure his decline has 95% to do with Sutter being the coach.
But 64 points is unacceptable for someone who is supposed to get
Crosby money.

3 years 4 millions each is fair enough for both sides.

If he is getting more invisible what does that say about the rest of the team? Since over those 5 years he's lead the team in scoring each of them. And over those 5 years has been number 14 in the whole league in scoring, on a team that can't score for the most part.

But, shots. :sarcasm:

Better yet, I think Kopi should be happy just working for peanuts. And I do mean peanuts.

Plus, he should be made to pay for his gear.

In all fairness Kopitar would probably put up better numbers if he didn't have to drag guys like Brown/Lewis around.

I'm sorry. Third line numbers? Kopitar had two less points than Jonathan Toews, six less than Getzlaf, eight less than Stamkos, and that's with Gaborik out for a good chunk of games and having a rotating cast of wingers who didn't exactly tear it up.

There's a difference between being critical and fair and being [obtuse], and you far exceeded that.

4 million ? You can't be serious. Please tell me your not serious and forgot the sarcasm smiley. Most 2nd liners didn't even hit Kopitars number, who's been our leading scorer forever.

I'm sorry but you are a buffoon. Third line numbers? Kopitar had two less points than Jonathan Toews, six less than Getzlaf, eight less than Stamkos, and that's with Gaborik out for a good chunk of games and having a rotating cast of wingers who didn't exactly tear it up.

There's a difference between being critical and fair and being stupid, and you far exceeded that.

Honestly, I can't tell if that's just a schtick response about Kopitar or not since it's so ridiculously out of touch with reality, but whatever, it's the internet.

I'm assuming you mean last year in particular, but let's not play revisionist history, Brown was an annual 50-60 point 20-30 goal scorer on Kopi's wing for a loooong time, the question mark was usually on the other side. Aside Williams and Smyth though he did have a parade of guys like Penner, O'Sullivan...Kyle mfing Calder...you name it. It's been amazing he's put up what he's done with what he's had on the wing.

But you're right, compare that to his contemporary in Toews, who has been with guys like Hossa, Kane, Saad...and still hasn't hardly surpassed Kopi despite being on a (generally) offensive powerhouse. That should tell everyone something.
