Kopitar; For or Against a trade if it comes to it?

All it means is it's better to get it done before the start of the season so he can't cut talks if he chooses.
I think if he were to cut talks it would be more a distraction to the team that holding them after what the team went through last year. It just adds more uncertainty.

IT's a question he's been (and will be) getting asked, and he's giving the best and only answer he can:

“You don’t think about it too much,” Kopitar said. “I’ve said it all along, it’d be nice if it was done before the season. But if not, it’s really not that big of a deal. There’s still plenty of time left in that regard, too. So we’ll see what happens.”

If he doesn't sign by the start of the season, he can focus on his job, and that is more important to him. It sounds like that is his intent, to focus on his job, which is the best thing to do.
What do the reporters expect him to say?

We've talked about this a lot in this thread, but it's worth linking here as a support/discussion point. I don't know how many are familiar with Appleyard as a poster but he does great work.

Not sure Kopitar absolutely fits the criteria anyway but he's close enough that it discusses everything we've discussed, just adds some math worth looking at about ELITE players, not ALL players.

Saw that last week and the assist number is what stands out to me. He's always been more of a passer, even though he has a great shot. And assist doesn't fall as fast and stay higher until the mid 30's.

Especially now that he's been deferring to Gaborik. I think we need to see his shot numbers go back up, but he should be getting more assists by default with this line.

in an ideal world we want to see shot numbers go up, but let's be honest - he hasn't been a shoot-first guy lately, and now he's playing with probably the best two wingers he's ever had in Gaborik and Lucic, where he doesn't have to drive offense single handedly. I'm honestly going to be amazed if he breaks 20 goals, I'm seeing a real Thornton-esque statline coming from Kopitar next season.

I don't know if we should really fuss about his goal scoring that much - we know he's a threat WHEN he shoots - even if he's shooting less compared to past seasons, I'd be much more worried if his point total overall keeps trending downwards.

He's less of a threat when he stops shooting and defers into a passive passing mode.

Is Kopitar already not shooting enough?

I predict Kopitar will have zero shots in tonight's game. :)

Sorry, but I am still not buying this one. Kopitar shouldn't defer to anyone. He needs to get to the places on the ice where he is dangerous as a shooter much more often. We already know from the 2014 playoffs that Gaborik doesn't mind going to the net to clean up rebounds and get tips. I'm betting that Lucic doesn't mind either. That line will be much more dangerous if Kopitar doesn't defer and gets to the middle and shoots the puck.

Appreciate the link you posted, and more than ever I am convinced that an 8-year, high-AAV (over $9M) deal for Kopitar is a bad idea.

Dean needs to go topsy turvy on that motha ****a and flip the script

Be like "We're suspending contract negotiations with Kopitar at the start of the season so he can focus on his play and getting his number back up."

You can not buy it all you want, his sagging shot totals started the moment Gaborik got here, that's fact. You were previously pointing to last season's shot totals being so low and were suggesting they needed to come up from there and I had then pointed out that they were actually very similar to post-2014 deadline Kopitar.

I agree with everything else.

The contract is right here buddy, but no ink touches it until you break 200 shots :sarcasm:

Like bonuses, but in reverse.

I am not saying Kopitar doesn't defer, because obviously he does. It's just not a good idea and he needs to make more of an effort to shoot the damn puck.

I'm sure Sutter isn't telling him to defer. That's Kopitar's problem and no one is causing that other than him.

Oh, if you're saying he SHOULDN'T, rather than DOESN'T, I fully agree.

I think his shooting actually helps his playmaking, too. Keeps the D honest. If they think he's just gonna pass it off to a wing it's easy to just wait for him to do laps on the boards. Gotta have a run game to have a passing game.
