Kopitar's an extremely valuable player. But if he wants to be paid Toews money he should be able to take over a crucial game and deliver the winning goals, not just possess the puck. In those games against Calgary, in those final games that meant the difference between going to the playoffs or not, who here thought Kopitar was going to deliver the goal that would win the game? During the 2012 playoffs I sure did, but not last season.

I'm with Kings17 on his expectations for Kopitar.

Anze Kopitar was at his peak offensively in 2009-10. It's now 2015, and one of the main points in this thread is that he simply can't perform at that level any longer. There is no shame in that as not many players can maintain that level of performance for a long period of time.

Kopitar is still a highly effective two-way center, but he isn't worth the 8-year, $72M+ contract that some here advocate giving him. The so-called experts that write articles for websites on the internet that say he is in his prime are simply wrong. The idea that he isn't scoring goals because he is unselfish is also hogwash. He defers and passes the puck because he can't get to a place on the ice where he himself is a scoring threat.

The idea that Kopitar can get that money somewhere else is just the "greater fool" theory in action.

one Q; was Kopitar a better player in 09/10 than he is now ?

If that was the case he would have already been signed.

Time doesn't matter.

First Option: Lombardi gives in and pays Kopitar

Second Option: Start the rebuild. After trading for Lucic and not having a first this year.

The rebuild is a slow burn. The Kings wouldn't be garbage immediately. They still have tons of valuable players. They wouldn't be contenders either. Just an average fringe playoff team.

Been there done that WITH Anze Kopitar last season. That's why it's perfectly okay for Dean to wait and see what Kopitar does through around January this season.

I thought we would see an extension by now. I'm a little surprised and starting to worry. I hope we have no bad blood with Kopi because if he leaves we do lose an elite franchise center for nothing. It's risky.

I have full faith in Dean. Whichever way he decides to go (which isn't even worth debating because we all know he's going to re-sign Kopitar) I'm fine.

I have complete faith in Dean as well, however when it comes to contracts I cringe a little lol. He plays hardball and is not afraid to lose a player for free but he will lose sleep over it.

I'm hoping it's more of the there is 2 contracts laid out and Dean said if you perform this way you get this contract, if you perform less you get this contract and they have some sort of agreement. I like to keep myself sane with thinking this

I tend to agree. It's a question of how much and for how long. Only problem I see is that if Kopitar has the kind of season he had last year, or only somewhat better, and his agent insists on stupid money, then Dean will be forced to trade him.

Eric Staal, who will be a UFA in 2016, is reportedly seeking around $9M per year. If Staal can get that contract (or more), imagine what it'll take to retain Kopitar, who is considerably better than Staal.

I can't imagine any team winning with Staal on that kind of stupid deal.

Older players better get used to the idea that the days of the retirement contract could be over.

9 million a year probably a negotiation starting point for Staal considering that's already a pay cut (crazy, right?). I'm sure he'd settle for 7.5-8 at this point. Unless he's been concussed somewhere along the way and thinks it's 2008 at the latest.
