According to league sources, Kaprizov left Russia recently for Dubai and tried to return to the U.S. He couldn’t clear into the U.S., though, perhaps because he doesn’t currently have a work visa despite signing a five-year contract last September. As The Athletic reported July 1, several Europeans — not just Russians — were given exceptions to play last season without visas because U.S. consulates were inundated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kaprizov, sources say, tried to cross the ocean by way of Caribbean Islands after not succeeding in the Dubai route. Again, he wasn’t permitted. Kaprizov then returned to Russia, where he remains.

Amazing to me that a 5 year, $45m contract doesn’t come with a work visa and automatic entry into the US. Also, between the Wild, the State Departartment and MN congressional members they couldn’t get this figured out when he was in the Caribbean??? I get that people hate the idea of preferential treatment but this is exactly the situation I would think it would apply.

I wonder why he is being denied? His agent was rather good last year with sneaking him into the us so I assume they are on top of the needed paperwork. Any indication on why he doesn’t have an authorized work visa?

Embassies are over run more or less.

Couple weeks ago there was a story in the Athletic about how a number of players got an exemption to work without a work visa last season. I assume Kaprizov was one.

The fact that he tried to flee, and ended up back in Russia, could make things worse for him. Especially if he's wanted by the military.
What a mess, should've listened to people who warned him about going back there.

It is a mess yes.

He could have had legal issues in the US if his visa was expired and he didn't leave too?

In many countries you can get visa right in airport if you somehow comes without one. It looks like USA is just not one of those countries...

Those are usually travelers visas, the US has them too. It is why they ask the reason for visit and length of stay questions. The residency, student, or long term work visas that need to go though all the red tape.

Deigned entrance from 2 different ports of entry makes it sound like Kap's ID has been red flagged.

So if you're just a traveler you can enter the country, but if you have a contract with one of the country's enterprises you can't?

Probably due to length of the stay. If you'll be actually living in that country, they want documentation and permits (visas). Making every single person visiting for the weekend get a visa would be ridiculous, though.

As long as you have a valid passport and there are no red flags that would disqualify entry. Yep, millions of people do it every year. There is of course a timeframe of how long a tourist visa lasts.

Being employed by a company means he needs a valid work visa, and is a completely different set of rules and regulations. A work visa isn't hard to get, it's just some paperwork and then waiting until the govt gets around to it.

Just right now that waiting could be a long time. It took my neighbor (US born, never done anything wrong, and never been out of the country) almost 6 months to get his passport recently. A few years ago it would be done in 3-4 weeks.

Does Russia have to allow the visa?
No, but Russian customs can deny him leaving the country. Obviously that wasn’t the case a couple days ago meaning he’s not wanted for anything.

Also, Russian media posted a quote from a Russian military source that says Kaprizov is not a subject of any investigation into fraudulent military IDs.

All signs point to him just waiting on a US visa right now

I don't think this ID story is Kirill's problem. I think he's supposed to show up at the enlistment office, and he didn't. 1 yr mandatory service there. Kirill has been listed as a student (delayed service), but this expired June 30.

It could explain why he tried to flee the country, even without valid travel documents. I'd say that's a pretty desperate move.

If he finished the university it's just 6 months. The Russian educational system has three education levels: medium, medium specialised (or medium professional) and highest. The first one you get when you finish school. The second one is school + college. And the third one you get when finish university/institute. If you have the highest education level you will serve just 6 months. If you get PhD (Science Candidate or Candidate of Science in Russia) you will be free from military service.

Okay but doesn't Russo read Russian papers? :D

From Gazeta...

"The Russian forward of the club of the National Hockey League (NHL) "Minnesota Wild" Kirill Kaprizov will settle issues with the military registration and enlistment office in the near future, "Match TV" reports.

Representatives of the hockey player plan to submit a certificate of training to the Ufa military registration and enlistment office by the end of the week. This will resolve the issue of military service: according to the law, Kaprizov should be granted a deferment. The forward is listed as a student of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration."

So then I guess we have nothing to worry about.

Ah, great then. If he's a student then he shouldn't care about anything. Of course everybody understands that his studentship is kinda suspicious, but in Russia even a Florida alligator can be a student if it finds right patron...
