Phaneuf is easily the worst regular NHL defensemen in the league. 30 games, 0 goals, -15, and averaging 15 minutes of ice time, including PP.

The only reason he should play as a #7 is because of his boat anchor of a contract. 3 yrs, $5.25m, movement protected.

With the Kings all but certain to get a top 5 pick, the asset I would love to be able to pry away is Ottawa's #1 pick now held by Colorado by virtue of the Duchene trade. With the Avs sitting as legitimate contenders in the Conference what would it take to obtain that pick? If it is Doughty, what else would we need to get in return? With two top 5 picks in the upcoming draft, the rebuild would be significantly accelerated.

Think the Avs would rather trade their own pick rather than the Sens.

Well they would be trading both picks and then some to get Doughty. It would actually be an ideal trade for both teams. The Kings would end up with three 1st round picks in this years draft, with two of them likely being top 5 picks and Colorado adds what very well may be their missing piece to add to their awesome forward group. They would be pushed to contenders and the Kings below average farm system would become elite on draft night. Obviously you'd rather trade Doughty to the East but the reality is Drew will be 32 or 33 when the Kings are a playoff threat again and the divisional playoff format makes it very unlikely the Kings and Avs would ever play in the playoffs.

People will bring up the Blake trade, but had things gone a bit different the Blake trade would have been amazing for the Kings. The Kings set themselves up great on that trade just made the wrong picks and Deadmarsh suffered a career ending injury.

Phanuef was actually good on the PP last year. He showed good offensive instincts, some creativeness and got the shot through from the point. It sort of made up for his mistake prone defensive play. This year he's not good at anything.

No reason he should be in the lineup. WD didn't seem to have a problem punishing Kovalchuk.

Ironic if Blake trades Doughty to Colorado?

I'd rather trade Kopitar for that pick.

I don't think Kopitar is returning a top 5 pick, he's to old. Doughty is over two years younger and defenseman seem to age better than forwards, although admittedly some of that has to do with their ability to be effective players even if the offense disappears, which makes Kopitar more like a defenseman in that regard. But even so, doubt a 31 year old signed to that kind of contract has a ton of value. Plus Colorado needs a defender way more than another forward.

We would need more than Colorado's 2 #1 picks for Doughty. If they throw in Cale Makar, we could take back a bad contract as long as it is not too long.

Based on Kopitars comments after last nights loss to Detroit, effort isn’t the problem with this team to explain this season.

I’m willing to take him at face value and prefer to believe it’s more about talent than compete level.

The Kings and some fans still want to believe the stars of this team are capable of beating the opponents best players on any night. Right now, the top four stars on the Kings are Kopitar, Carter, Brown and Doughty.

It’d be difficult to find another team which gets less production from their top four stars than that group.

They don't have any bad contracts. At least not what we Kings fans know as bad contracts anyway. The closest would be Johnson, but he serves the Kings in no way.

For a team tied for 31st, people have become quite optimistic with the trade scenarios. Not only get Colorado's 1st, but also Ottawa's, and throw in the 4th overall pick from a couple years ago? All that for a now 29 year old with a NMC that is due $11m on the cap every year until 2027.

The Avs are pretty young. They have time on their side. Instead of paying all that for Doughty, maybe they wait and throw all their money at Karlsson? Even if they miss out on Karlsson, Doughty isn't going anywhere. They could come circle back around the Kings at any time. Call up in July. Call up in September. Wait 12 months from now, let Doughty and the Kings fall further into a hole, decrease the price.

If Col offered their two first rounders and Ian Cole for Doughty, I’d be all over it. If you want Makar, then I think one of the first round picks is removed.

Apparently the Penguins have been asking LA about Muzzin. What would it take? Maatta+?

I mean, you could always have Johnson back. :sarcasm::popcorn:

Gaining almost 6 years in age with a similar cap hit for 2 additional seasons might be the +. I have no idea what Muzzin would command on the trade market, but it can't be too much more than Maatta. Same with Pearson. Hagelin is probably about right.
