Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Drury has been methodical in his moves to improve the roster. Trouba gone, Vaak in. Kakko gone, Borgen and picks in. Chytil gone, Miller in.

The team is in a unique spot where they’re trying to battle their way back in to a playoff spot. Even if Drury agreed with most of us here that state moving Smith and Vesey would be good business he should wait until closer to the deadline unless some crazy offer comes in. Let Berard and Othmann continue getting big minutes in the AHL and marinate as long as you can and it’s cheap insurance in case of another major injury. There’s really no rush.

For example, what happens if Cuylle gets hurt and Othmann gets hurt in the AHL? With Edstrom out, we all of a sudden may want to hold on to Smith or Vesey if the team is in a playoff spot at the deadline.

That’s just one example.

The move in most intrigued to see whether it happens or not is Lindgren. There is clearly no internal replacement for him at the NHL level right now. Will one of the teams hovering around contention fall out of it and have a serviceable veteran LD who could be had for very little, thus opening up the opportunity to trade Lindgren? The Rangers don’t have major assets to send somewhere in exchange for a rental and nor should they. I truly think that the LD addition is best made in the offseason via UFA. Chychrun, Gavrikov, Provorov, Orlov.

I think the market will be flush with options on the defensive side this summer. A lot of guys are going to be looking to get paid and a lot of bad teams are going to be throwing money around.

That was on a stacked team & he only moved up to the 2nd pair halfway through the playoffs when Girard got knocked out for the duration.

Again, I'm not against it, I just don't think he's going to get any better at this point. The Avs gave up on him for a reason.
The Avs traded from a position of strength to address a position of weakness. They didnt give up on him

I’m gassing up the car. Where am I picking them up?
Im hitting the gas while in park in the garage with the door closed. hard pass

What about Ryan Graves from the Penguins? Idk where they stand with him now, but with last year's performance, they were really unhappy with him, and he's got some term on his deal. I think he'd work fine next to Fox.

Plus, it kind of nicely follows our prospect development plan.

he sucks

Feel like Byram is just a repeat of the Filip Chytil dilemma. I’m certainly not trading Schneider+ for him like that Barstool guy suggested

He already did this. He’s a very good player and fits our timeline perfectly. The only question is the head injuries.
that guy is clueless

I hit you with a laugh emoji because that was a great line.
I’m trying to understand your logic. You responded to the poster above me that the Avalanche traded from a position of strength to address a position of weakness. But when @duhmetreE suggested the same for the Rangers you are against it.
Ranger’s strong on wing and weak at LD and Center.

Vesey is going to get like a 6th or 7th round pick at best it really doesn't matter if they decide to keep him or trade him.

Yeah, he's better as a spare then traded. Not a whole lot of value there no matter how you feel about the guy.

Preds fans seem to think the asking price ok tommy novak wouldnt be that high. Will be interesting to see if we pursue

That's the kind of player I definitely take a flyer on if the cost isn't too high. Needs a change of scenery.

Steve gives the Rangers a 20% chance of making the playoffs. Too many teams. This segment is from yesterday. Last night, TB, Boston and Detroit won. The Islanders won too.

The Rangers will have a rebrand.

He sees the Rangers possible moving Reilly Smith and Jimmy Vesey. Zac Jones. Other moves heading into next season.

Full segment

The Rangers have too many sheep. Miller is a sheepherder.

Worried about Chytil's concussions.

Did Steve buy those Emmy's?

The Rangers need to cut a lot of fat. Mika is not a RW. Maybe he finishes out the season on RW. He has five more seasons remaining on his contract. Is he playing RW for the next five seasons? It seems the Rangers don't want Trocheck on the third line. Even Trocheck's role has changed since Miller arrived. His first unit PP time is gone.

Kreider is a LW and the Rangers have too many LW's. His numbers have dropped. His skating has dropped a bit. On Sunday night, he couldn't finish a 2 on 1. Two more seasons. Maybe he needs a change of scenery. You can't say he is injured. He is playing for the U.S. team next week. Other players have dropped out because of injury. Pietrangelo is not playing for Canada. He is still playing for Vegas. He will use the time off to heal his issue. Quinn Hughes may not play for the U.S. because he has a nagging injury.

The Rangers can allocate the combined $15M in cap hits on other players. A natural RW, two way center and definitely more help on D. Moving their money for just picks won't be easy. Match up the money in a trade. I am sure teams aren’t happy with their guys.

Definitely move the rentals for futures. Lindgren has his issues. Pettersson and Ceci were moved in packages involving first round picks. They aren't Larry Robinson. Package Lindgren and Smith. Retain 50% on both players.

The Rangers miss the playoffs this season and hopefully the Rangers select a good player. The Capitals missed the playoffs in 2023. Ninth pick overall. Ryan Leonard. Some of their other young players like Protas and McMichael have matured this season. The Caps traded Orlov and Hathaway to Boston for a package of picks including a first round pick which was traded to Toronto for Sandin in 2023. The Caps made the playoffs last season. The east isn't a great conference. The Rangers can be back on top next season. Jensen and a 3rd for Chychrun. Kuemper for PLD. A 3rd round pick for Thompson. Signed Roy. Leonard will be joining them soon. Maybe he turns pro and plays a few games this season. His impact will be starting next season. The Rangers can make similar moves. Sell some. Draft a quality player who will play in two years. Their young forwards like Cuylle take the next steps. Othmann and maybe Berard. Gabe turns pro. Move money around in trades.

It's not a hopeless situation. Just need to think beyond next week.

i’d argue the situation is almost good. mika should be moveable with the cap increase. There’s gonna be a bevy of good UFAs this year and next that could ACTUALLY be game changers. drury has a chance to completely reshape the look of this entire organization this offseason. we could flip guys for draft picks/prospects, then use those assets to add someone who helps now but better firs our timeline. we’ll see if he has the creativity to pull it off.

Things open up immensely if Drury has the balls to move Panarin but idk if that is likely

Byram has become incredibly overrated on this board. He's been pretty shit this year even in comparison to the other D on his team. Hes not Mattias Samuelsson bad, but he's pretty bad.

I don't see the Rangers being interested in him after moving Chytil because of the risk attached to him. Same issues apply here.
I’d take Samuelsson if we could get him cheap. Bit of a risk, but seems like a worthwhile reclamation project. If he can stay healthy and turn it around, he’s a big top 4 LHD on a great long term contract.

I feel that there's a prevailing notion out there that "not an NHL player" is some sort of hyperbole used by the analytics people.

No, people use that phrase for a reason.

It's not meant as smartass response when people ask "replace them with who?" and you say "an NHL player."

That is meant literally.
LMFAO

good morning. we are officially closer to buffalo than a wild card spot as of this morning

IMG_9583.jpeg

The Rangers were less points out of a playoff spot on January 5th compared to today. There should be no trading for rental help at all, and as many expiring contracts need to be gone by the deadline at minimum.

We get Tommy Novak and im going to become irrationally confident and fully sucked back in

Again issue is not the minimal asset returned.
Issue is the opportunity cost of denying a young guy chance to be called up, develop.
On top of this Vesey obv HAS NOTHING left in the tank, NOTHING

I can and DO say he is injured.
Any denial of that is rejection of the obvious
Yes, he should not be playing at all and instead healing
Hopefully he will sit, either be replaced or have min ice time where he coasts

I want to see him and Othmann up post deadline. More guys who will play the style JT plays.
Unfortunately Berard weighs 44 lbs less, and Othman weighs 32 lbs less than J.T. Berard played 3 games in the NHL before he missed time by being banged up. Othman missed a lot of time in Hartford. Unfortunately both will have to, shall we say manage that style of play if they want to have long careers in the NHL. Although I know what your saying in terms of being aggressive, pesky, and being willing to at least spend some time in the middle of the ice and in the slot.
