It can't be a coincidence I feel like. The way the started out last year and how they played was unlike I've ever seen them play like before. Once decemebr/January came about the team played more tight and less risky
What part was Turgeon, and what part was unrepeatable career years for 30+ year old players? We keep throwing various things out there to see if something sticks.
On Dec 9th, the Kings were 20-8-3. That's 43 points in 31 games, or 114 points in 82 games. Since 13-14, only 6 teams have gotten 114 points in a season, and the Caps did it twice. That's about 1 team per year on average. They were going to come back down to Earth, and from mid Dec to mid Jan, they did that. By Jan 20th, they were 24-17-5. That's 53pts in 46 games, so about 95 over 82. That's closer to normal for the Kings since they got good again in 09-10. Since then, not including this season, they had 834 points in 704 games, which is 97 in 82.
Turgeon was here for Kopitar, Brown, Doughty. He was also here for Toffoli, Pearson, and Kempe going ice cold and having no presence at all on the ice. What was he responsible for? Would they consciously stop playing the way they were playing that got them a 20-8-3 record? Would Stevens be that stupid? Not in a joking way, but seriously. They were 8th in GF, and 2nd in GA on Dec 10th. Would Stevens say, we're playing too well, we have to switch it up? Seeing as how the Flyers were in the top 5 in GF during both full seasons that Stevens was the head coach there, I would guess no, Stevens can't be that dumb.
What comes first; losing a few and finding a way to play tighter and less risky, or playing tighter and less risky and finding a way to lose a few? If there is a concrete answer to that, someone could make a lot of money, because every professional sports team would want to talk to you. Outside of a Gold State Warriors, who just have so much overwhelming talent compared to their competition that it's almost pointless to play a season.
