When did he say he was going to set the market? I heard him say he wasn't going to ruin the goalie market for guys that'll be in his shoes down the line. Those are two completely different things.
If rumors are correct & he’s asking for 10m per, without ever playing more than 44 games in a season would be setting the market imo. What happens when Igor Shesterkin comes up for negotiations next offseason? Hypothetical,, Agent: “Swayman signed for 10m per last summer before showing he could handle the workload of a number one. I want 12.5m per.” Is that not Swayman setting the market? I think so.

With that said I’m a Swayman fan I’d offer 8m per for 8 years. Cap going up, teammates love him, kid is talented. In 3-4 years 8m will seem like a bargain for a top 10 goalkeeper

If a gm a traded a vezina winner for a 3m cap dump and a late 1st WITHOUT knowing if the guy they had could handle the load...

said GM needs to be fired immediately.
It’s that simple. If Swayman truly wants 10m he should’ve been the guy jettisoned to Ottawa. Not to mention he’d net the team a better return in trade

The comment was "he said he wanted to set the market"...... that's not what he said.

Rask signed at a 10.9 cap hit % when he was Swayman age. Rask highest GP was 45 games. Rask CH% with today's cap would be $9.5 million on an 8yr deal. I've never heard anyone talk about how Rask was setting the market.

Are the rumors correct? Has any one credible confirmed besides that one outlet?

Why does he need to be signed to long term deal. If short term is cheaper, do it, if he wants to. 4x6 or whatever it would be is much better than 9x8 if he pops his hip in three years. If he is top 3 G in 3 or 4 years, then give him 10 or whatever top goalies are making then. Plenty of time to get replacement in 3 years

If we be somewhat optimistic and assume that Sway signs for somewhere around $9m p.a., it will mean that the Bruins are spending 13.6% of their cap on goalies. Combine that with the defenders and they’ll essentially be spending 47.2% of their cap on defense. That’s the most in the league, and the 2nd-highest goalie spend after Florida. So essentially they’ll be the most defense-heavy team in the NHL and trying to succeed as an outlier, although in-season trades may of course change this to some extent.

Is this a problem? The last two Cup winners spent solidly on D, albeit probably not quite to the same extent, and the old mantra that defense wins championships holds true even if the likes of Colorado and almost Edmonton are really starting to push hard against it. So it’s not prima facie a bad strategy. But any time you’re at the extreme end in some significant regard there will be consequences/drawbacks, and in this case it does have two requirements in order to work – the defense and goaltending are going to have to really show up most nights, because the team’s ability to outscore too many errors is likely to be low. Too often last season the Bruins’ D was messy, and that can’t continue. And up front Pasta’s going to be carrying a big load as the team’s only consistent high goal scorer who’s in his prime. At least some of Lindy, Coyle, Zacha, Freddy, Geekie, Lysell and Poitras are going to need to really step up and provide good secondary scoring to help him out, in addition to whatever Marchand has left in the tank.

All of which is pretty obvious, and with the partial exception of 2022-23 Boston have been a defense-first team for years, so it’s not new. But this year’s roster is shaping up as more skewed than any in the recent past, so the challenge is very much going to be there to make it work even so, at least until they can evaluate and tinker prior to the deadline. Sway of course is only a part of that puzzle, but for sure he’s going to be very busy proving he fully deserves whatever amount he eventually agrees to. By the sounds of it he’s willing to bet on himself, as is his right. Hopefully it pays off.

As long as he is signed by camp I honestly don’t see the need to panic. Both sides want to get it done, both sides want him to be in Boston long term.

Swayman has every right to seek every dollar he believes he is worth. There is not a single person in here who would do otherwise in his position.

Sweeney is trying to get the possible deal for the team. There is not a single person in here who would do otherwise in his position.

Its going to be ok
