To all those saying we shouldn't pay Lundqvist 8.5 million because you shouldn't pay that much for a goalie: What exactly do you want, or rather expect Sather, to do with those extra couple of millions?
Now, first of all we have to assume that Lundqvist gets back to his old play that he showed for most of the past seven years. If he doesn't, then of course you are right that it's far too much.
But assuming he gets back to being one of the best goalies of the world, then that money is far better spend on him re-signing than everything else. People continuously bring up teams like the Blackhawks, who don't need to spend much on goaltending. But that's only because they have so many great players and, indeed, they rather need the money to retain all those great players. But who do we need to retain that can't be afforded due to Lundqvist? We need to get enough great players first before we even may think about downgrading our goaltending for a few million dollars more in capspace.
For this team re-signing Lundqvist even to such a cap hit is a no brainer. There isn't just one way to build a cup team, there are many. And there sure as hell are some that involve the goaltender being amongs the team's best and highest paid players.
