That's how you shake the confidence of your young players.

ALways saw it as this: if you earn your opportunity - it doesn't matter if you're a rookie among the vets. If Leonard comes in at the main camp and outplays his competition for a wing spot on the top lines - he should be playing there his 1st pro game. To put him on the 4th line to learn defense? Man buy some pylons on the market for a vet min and let them play defense all day. These kids need to devlop their offense at this level first and foremost.
I get where you're coming from, but keep in mind we don't have a traditional 4th line (he'd get a lot of important deployments and considerable ice time). Also, pretty sure he'd get some PP time as well and if he excels at that spot, he'd be moved up top the top 6 after a while anyway.

Same agent as JC6. Maybe hes hard to deal with.

I dunno. I think they're very different situations. Mikko was traded from the team that made him a star to a place he has no particular love for. JC6 has finally found a home after a career of fits and starts. But he also clearly spent some part of the past few months arranging a wedding--and maybe is expecting??

Agree with all of this. Washington is a great place to come. JC6 will sign here. Mikko… don’t know.

I think it’s more do we want JC6 at the cost. I have no doubt he’d like to stay. You could hear it in his post game interview. Caps have won more games under Ted’s watch than any other team in that timeframe.

They know what they are doing. It’s not lost on players in the league. Like at all.

That is why i think they will get a deal done. Fit is right for both sides. Age is right at 26 and he is arguably our best offensive defenseman. JC74 will pass the torch to him. And when Cole comes he’ll be cost controlled and likely in top 4. If that is the case we move Fever or Sandin.

Maybe, but what the hell are the Canes doing? Did they just give up Necas so they can sell Rantanen at the deadline?!?
That’s what happens when you have an owner meddle in the day to day of the hockey ops department. Apparently he dill do anything to have a “superstar” player in Raleigh

If JC6 won’t stay or they don’t want to sign him long term…do you not move him? This is a question, not an endorsement to do so. Seems like quite the asset to just let walk away, (if that were to occur)
No. You go for it this year. As pointed out by many, who knows when the Caps will be this good again, and we know Chychrun fits into this team, so there's minimal risk.

In case someone was wondering, the Caps have the 2nd worst shootout record in the league. Only the Sharks at 0-4 have been worse.

Good thing there's not shootout in the playoffs.

This is JC6 biggest contract. But I think it gets done before trade deadline. If not, i still think both sides are committed to getting something done.
Starting to think the Duhaime signing might not have been a total coincidence (one of Chychrun’s best buds since elementary school)

I read this is the one area where practicing on 2 right catching goalies seems to have an effect, though they have a lefty catcher they can practice on

For the most part IMO you either have the offense or you don't by the time you get to the NHL. The biggest difference between the pro leagues and juniors is the attention to detail on the defensive side of the game -- not just in-zone but on the forecheck, in transition, etc.. That can be learned, especially for a guy that clearly is as smart and hardworking as Leonard.

Being on the "fourth" line next to Dowd and Duhaime would be completely fine and probably beneficial for Leonard next year IMO. If we get into year 2 and 3 and he's still there, then maybe we can start having these conversations.

yeah, this was reported when the signing happened and probably purposeful that Caps signed him to 2 year deal with a pretty big cap number. Duhaime has earned it in my opinion. Now we need second part of ROI with a JC6 extension.
