Is this leafs team likeable?

It isnt relevent on the players...only the gm. This is a sport. Mastery, skill and will is the predominant attributes of the hierarchy. Attempting to debase a player on a social hierarchy is not relevant. The stars that emerge from this team will not necessarily be the most likeable. They will be the most competent alpha dogs. Marner, Matthews and Nylander will live and die by the skills they possess relative to what they are being paid. I get that. Not taking less is irrelevant beyond that. Likeability is irrelevant.
I don't agree. the playera didn't have to ask for so much. you either want to play on a good team and take a bit less, or you want a few extra million to play on a less competitive team.

The players can ask for whatever. The gm didnt have to give it to them.

Imagine this scenario.

We don't bring in Tavares.

Dubas is strict on Nylander, he caps him at 6.0 million. If he wants to sit the year out, we let him.

Matthews and Marner get what they deserve, 10 million for Matthews and 9 million for Marner.

Matthews, Nylander and Marner combined salary = 25 million.

vs Matthews, Nylander, Marner Tavares current salary = 40 million.

What could we do with that 15 million?

Who cares if they are likeable if they are winning.

Winning makes them likeable. If they were winning no one would care.

Fix the winning. Period.

This is such a simpleton take.

From a GM POV...It does no good to have the fans turn on players or players sour on the team, so the GM also has to factor this in.

Deal got done pretty quick when fans started turning on Marner.

Most teams with high salary players that are underproducing are unlikable.

The likeability will sky rocket if they start winning. It's all about winning.

Turning on these guys already is just mental weakness.

Damn you literally said the exact same thing right above me, my bad.

I agree with you that two of them are overpaid, but by how much? 1 million for Matthews, and 2 million for Marner? That's 3 million. We shouldn't have overpaid, but we also shouldn't be freaking out for 3 million extra per year when we have zero bad players with bad contracts. Look at other top teams such as Boston and you'll find they've been overpaying depth players such as useless Backes an extra 6 million.

The problem right now isn't the money, it's that these high-end offensive players haven't been producing. I don't believe for a second that Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander are going to continue producing like they have in the past 3 games. Our luck will change, and I'm hoping it's this Saturday. Under Keefe, we've been amazing in most of the 7 games yet we've managed to barely score in the past 3 games.

How good would a $2.5M backup looked in our 7 B2B games? Correct me if I'm wrong, but even a modest 5 out 14 points puts us nicely into 2nd and positioned for home ice in the first round.

So this is all about Marner is it?
It isnt about a culture where an alpha feels he should eat as much as others who came before him. I believe your take is simplistic.

Was never going to be 15 million.

Try to find a player to score the 40 goals they are missing from Tavares ?

I like this team, and when they get themselves back into a playoff position (and games in hand come down a bit) everyone else will turn around and say they like them too.

We are now 11th in the conference with TB 1 point behind us with 4 games in hand. The fricken Rangers are 1 point up on us with two games in hand. It is not a favourable position to be in.

We have beaten 4 decent teams (Colorado and Zona after Babs was fired and the Bruins and Vegas in OT at home) in 30 games.

Sure mathematically they have a shot but tell me what you think of this team when the playoffs start and the 3 Amigos tweet a picture of them teeing it up on the golf course in Arizona.

This team is not enjoyable anymore. Dubas has literally sucked the fun out of this club.

I am taking a break from this site. I dont see the point in wasting my time when the on ice product is below average and not enjoyable.

Hopefully either we turn it around, or dubas gets fired. Both would be ideal however.

Go leafs go.

Time will tell.

I completely agree they are in a large hole right now.

They are right back in it with a good stretch of games.

Could go the way I mentioned, could go the way you mentioned.

The next 4 games should give us a good indication of where the season is going. You are not going to walk into STL, Edm, Cal, and Van and beat them without putting in a good effort. 3 of 4 are very winnable games if they "want" them enough.

Completely Agree.

I've been saying it for a while, they just need a good run to get back into it, but that run needs to happen soon.

The last 2 games were tough losses, but i thought they played good, but were on the wrong side of some bad decisions, bad luck and missed opportunities.

I know not everyone loves Jeff Oneill, but he is a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to hockey, He always says "Before a good run a team usually loses a couple games they should have won".

That's on Dubas. He had the option of not re-signing one of our good depth players: Johnsson, Kapanen, Kerfoot. Johnsson is easily expendable and at any point of time could have been traded for cap-space. Especially now with the emergence of Mikheyev and Engvall, it's the perfect time to trade Johnsson away for assets and cap-space.

Not sure why that move hasn't been made yet, but you have to assume that it's coming very soon. I would be patient for that move incoming. Hoping it's T.Jarry from Pittsburgh or Georgiav from New York!

Of course it's on Dubas.....that was my point.

The OP said overpaying 88, 34, and 16 by $3M was no big deal, and I countered with that additional cap space could have been used on a decent backup. (and you could still keep the good depth players you mention)

I love Rielly, Tavares and Marner. But then I think back to the late 90s/early 2000s with Sundin, Kaberle, CuJo, Antropov, Quinn as coach, etc. -- this team doesn't come remotely close in being liked as a group like that.
